Jean Jacques Bilbo

Descendants of Jean Jacques Bilbo

Generation No. 1

1. JEAN JACQUES BILBO was born Abt. 1675 in Saintonge,Port Des Banques, France, and died Bef. 1723 in Manakintowne, Virginia. He married DUTOI.

Notes for JEAN JACQUES BILBO:
Jacques Bilbaud arrived in Virginia w/ his wife & son fleeing religious persecution. He was a Huguenot refugee. He came in 1700 on "Ye First Shippe" the Mary and Ann from England after departing Port des Barques, Xaintonge Province, France.

He was the founder of Manakintowne, Virginia, 1700.

Jacques Bilbo received a passport from the English Government:

By the Honorable Thomas Collier
Lt. Governor and Commander and Chief of his majestics castles, forts, forces and Island of Jersey, suffer the bearer hereof James Bilbo, quietly to pass from hence into England, without let trouble, molestation or hinderance, he behaving himself as becometh. Given under my hand at his majesty's castle England the 28th day of March 1699.

Thomas Collier - To all Whose These It May Concern

Jacques BILBO was born in France. He immigrated to Virginia in 1700 and settled in Manakin Town. His and Susanne/Susanne Duty/Dutoi`s son, Jean Pierre (Peter) BILBO, was born in Manakin Town, Virgina, in 1706 and died in Lunenburg (later Mecklenburg) County, Virgina, in 1751. Jean Pierre married (1) Susanne Pankey, who died in 1739, and (2) Elizabeth ------. Jean Pierre (Peter) BILBO probably moved to Lunenburg (later Mecklenburg) County, Virginia, between 1747, when his son, William, was born in Manakin Town, Virginia, and 1751.

Child of JEAN BILBO and DUTOI is:

  1. JOHN PETER2 BILBO, b. Abt. 1706, Virginia; d. April 02, 1751, Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Generation 2
2. JOHN PETER BILBO (JEAN JACQUES1) was born Abt. 1706 in Virginia, and died April 02, 1751 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He married (1) ELIZABETH FRANCES BESS BRISTER SHERMAN. He married (2) SUSANNE 1729.

Notes for JOHN PETER BILBO:
aka Jean Pierre Bilbo/Billiebo/Bilbeau.

In 1723, his son Jean Pierre Billiebeau was living in the house with Pierre Dutoi, which indicates that his parents were probably deceased. The fact that he was taken in by the Dutoi family, and later they left a tract of land to Isaac Dutoi in his will, might surmise that his mother was a Dutoi.

Will of John Peter Bilbo

In 1747 or 1748, Jean Pierre {John Peter} sold his land in Manakin and moved to Lunenburg County in southern VA. He was listed as a tithable in Lunenburg Co., VA. in 1748. In 1750 he obtained 1626 acres of land on Allen's Creek near the Roanoke River. (Patent Book 29, Page 305)

Bilbo was a leader in his Church and affluent for the time. He owned 162 acres of land in King William Parish in 1732. The previous year he was appointed processioner for lands. March 15, 1734 he took oath as Vestryman and October 30, 1742 he took the oath of Church Warden. Birth records indicate that John Peter Bilbo stood as godparent to many born in the area.
He moved to Lunenburg County as early as 1748, being shown on the tith list then. He patented 1626 acres of land on Allen's Creek. Some of the Bilbo children either remained in Manakin or moved back there after John Peter's death.

John Peter Bilbo died 2 April, 1751 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His will bears the date 15 November, 1750 and is recorded in Lunenburg Co. in Deed book 1, page 496.

3. WILLIAM BILBO (JOHN PETER2, JEAN JACQUES1) was born May 25, 1747 in Virginia, and died 1822 in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married SARAH SALLY BUGG 1768, daughter of JOHN BUGG. She was born March 17, 1749/50 in Virginia, and died January 07, 1820 in Mercer County, Kentucky.

Notes for WILLIAM BILBO:
The principal source used, Early Settlers of Mecklenburg County Virginia Volume II, shows a gap in the records from 1761 to 1765. Between 1765 and 1767, several BILBO family members were involved in a series of land transactions on Allen's Creek. In 1765, John BILBO, who had apparently moved to Cumberland County, Virginia, sold to John HOBSON of Lunenburg County, Virginia, "... that parcel of land laid off agreeable to the last will and testament of John Peter BILBO ..." on Allen's Creek. The land adjoined Joseph BILBO, William BILBO, Joseph FREEMAN, Peter BILBO, and others. In 1766, William BILBO sold his inheritance of 426 acres on the east side of Allen's Creek to John HUMPHRIES. The land adjoined Joseph BILBO, John BILBO, and others. In 1767, Peter BILBO, who had apparently moved to Goochland County, Virginia, sold to James TUCKER (Jr.), his inheritance of 300 acres on Allen's Creek, adjoining Edward BEVILL, William MURPHEY, and WHITWORTH. James TUCKER, Jr., then sold the land to James TUCKER, Sr. Also in 1767, James BILBO bought 505 acres on the South side of the Roanoke River from Sherwood BUGG.

The last record in VA. was Mar 04, 1784, when he sold another tract of land.

A Revolutionary War record is not on file in the National Archives, but that he did serve is evidenced by the following found in Revolutionary War Records, Mecklenburg Co., VA.

He married EDNA GEORGE April 30, 1788 in Halifax County, Virginia, daughter of JOHN GEORGE and FRANCES. She was born Abt. 1767 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1870 in Greene County, Georgia.

Notes for MATTHEW BILBO:
There is no evidence showing when Matthew BILBO moved to Pittsylvania or Halifax County, Virginia. The 1787 census (Pittsylvania County?) shows Matthew BILBO in the John GEORGE household. He was certainly in the area by 1788, when he married Edna GEORGE, the daughter of John GEORGE.

In 1790, John GEORGE migrated from Pittsylvania County, Virgina, to Greene County, Georgia, where he died the same year. The 1785 tax list for Pittsylvania County, Virginia, shows 10 whites in the John GEORGE household. Based on the research of Marty Grant, the known children of John GEORGE were Mary, who married Daniel ROBERTS in 1786, Edna, who married Matthew BILBO in 1788, and William, born about 1771. Matthew BILBO and Edna (GEORGE) BILBO went with John GEORGE to Greene County, Georgia. Mary and William are unaccounted for. John, Richard, Thomas, and Benjamin GEORGE, who were later noted in Lincoln County, Tennessee, could account for the remaining members of the John GEORGE household. Together with William GEORGE, we would have the right number of families, in the right age group, and with the right family associations. There is no firm proof for this assumption, but the circumstantial evidence is strong and makes this area the best choice for further research.

In 1790 Matthew was in Wilks County, court records. We next find him in Greene Co., GA in 1795 court records. On Dec 03, 1797, Matthew was given permission to go through the Creek Nation and arrived at the Tombigbee River settlement in present day Washington Co., AL. He built his home on an island in the Tombigbee River, and claimed in addition a tract of land west of the island which was bounded by the river and by Bilbo creek. The island and creek were named for Matthew Bilbo, and are known by the name Bilbo today.

On Oct 23, 1802, Thomas Bates, a neighbor, entered the land claim for Matthew, which leads us to believe that he was ill at the time and unable to enter his own claim. Having a neighbor transact business for one was not at all an uncommon practice at the time.
