Page 1 of the Winkfield Collection (My grateful thanks to Rita Sheridan for her generosity in sharing this great collection)

Colour Sergeant Robert Winkfield, 2813. H Company, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.

He joined the army after accidentally injuring a horse, when it caught its hoof in a rabbit hole.
Rather than face his father, he walked as far as he could and got to Bury St Edmunds, where he took the Queen's Shilling. He was to stay in the Army for 21 years.
