HOWELLS CEMETERY

Howells Cemetery, New Vernon Rd., Howells, Orange Co., NY. This cemetery is about a half acre, well maintained and easy to walk.

This is the front of the cemetery, on the bank that faces New Vernon Rd. The lower left stone is for HOYT, along side of the WHEAT family. Other stones here are AXFORD, BELL, and Caroline, wife of George A. STUBBS. Many are not legible.

View, center of cemetery The large stone, on the left is the MAPES head stone which is in front of Winfield Harvey Mapes and Myrta REED Mapes. The largest stone on the right is the BENJAMIN - MAPES familys' stone. In the rear the small building looks like a tool/maintenance shed, in good repair. There are two entrances to this cemetery on New Vernon Road. When you enter the first entrance, coming from "downtown" Howells, you will see an old water pump on your right.

HOWELL In Memory of William [Albertson] Howell who departed his life August 28, 1811 in the 31st year of his age. "Both old and young that passes by, As you are now so once was I, As I am gone so you must be, Prepare in time to follow me" [Born 23 Dec 1780, son of Edward Howell & Clementine Albertson. Married 12 Dec 1803, Elizabeth Callender daughter of Samuel Callender & Martha Hanson. Six children. See "Descendants of Edward Howell" for his genealogy.

HOWELL - BEAKES Samuel Callender Howell, Born May 2, 1807. Died Jan. 23, 1896. His Wife, Sally J. Beakes, 1812 - 1903. This is the opposite side of Elizabeth's stone.

MAPES family stone stands at the head of Winfield Harvey Mapes and Myrta Reed Mapes stones. To the far left, in back of this stone is the DE VOE family stones; across from this stone, to the left is the BENJAMIN-MAPES large stone. The center of the stone caught my reflection, wearing a pink shirt and jeans.

SHAW - WALDRON The left stone belongs to WILLIAM SHAW; on his right is Mary [WALDRON] Shaw, daughter of John WALDRON; her stone reads: "In memory of Mary Shaw, wife of William Shaw, daughter of the late John Waldron of Harlaem near the City of New York who was born 1 January 1759 and departed this life 11 April 1819 aged 60 years 3 months and 11 days". The "red" stone on the far right belongs to JAMES YOUNG SHAW and reads: "In memory of James Young Shaw who departed this life December 11th aged 8 years 10 months 7 days."
