DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT PARKER OF BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS

The following genealogy was sent to Thomas Parker from Marshal A. Parker about 1920. The records can also be found in PARKER IN AMERICA, Niagara Frontier Publishing, Buffalo, NY, 1911 and in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, volumes 112 through 114, article on "Robert Parker of Barnstable, Mass." by Maclean W. (1.) Robert Parker was born about 1630 somewhere in England, and came to America with his parents and one brother named Elisha and a sister named Jane about 1635, and landed at Cape Cod. He married Sarah James of Barnstable, MA on Jan.28,1656, and had four children by this marriage; Sarah (James) Parker died June 30th, 1664, less than four months after the birth of her fourth child. Robert married again in August, 1667 to Patience Cobb (daughter of Henry and Patience (Hurst) Cobb of Barnstable) Additional Notes, and had eight children by this marriage. He died at Barnstable, MA between April 13, 1684 and March 2, 1685. His children (all born at Barnstable, MA) are as follows:

Children of Robert and Sarah (James) Parker are:

     1. Mary (b.4/1/1658, died probably soon after the birth of her eighth child in 1704) married before 3/2/1685 to John Jenkins (1659-1736)

     2. Samuel (b. 6/30/1660, d.Barnstable, 1717) married on 12/12/1695 to Hannah Bumpas; seven children.

     3. Alice (b. 1/20/1662, d.in infancy)

     4. Jane (b.3/3/1664, d.2/1719 at Barnstable, MA) married John Isham (b. 3/31/1654 in England, d.9/3/1713 Barnstable) on 12/16/1687; nine children.

Children of Robert and Patience (Cobb) Parker:

     5. Thomas (b. 8/21/1668, d. prior to 3/17/1731/2) married on 12/5/1693 to Mary Jenkins, daughter of John Jenkins; eight children.

     6. Daniel (b.4/19/1670 d.12/23/1728 buried at Lothrop's Hill, Barnstable) married on 12/11/1689 to Mary Lumbert, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Derby) Lumbert; eleven children.

     7. Joseph (b.2/18/1672 d.1/26/1733/4) married on 7/1/1697 to Mercy Whiston (d.7/31/1750) daughter of John Whiston of Scituate, MA; seven children. Both gravestones of Joseph and Mercy are located at the old Falmouth burying ground, Mass.

     8. BENJAMIN (b.3/15/1673) married on 12/8/1698 to Rebecca Lumbert, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Derby) Lumbert; ten children.

     9. Hannah (b.4/10/1676)

     10. Sarah (b.3/12/1678 d.1718) married on 12/10/1696 to Samuel Crocker; fifteen children.

     11. Elisha (b.4/4/1680 d. 10/27/1731) married on 5/26/1720 to Mary (Joyce) Gorham (b.1680, daughter of Hosea and Elizabeth (Chipman) Joyce and widow of James Gorham); one child.

     12. Alice (b.9/15/1681 d.8/20/1727) unmarried.

(2.) Benjamin, fourth child of Robert Parker and Patience (Cobb) Parker, married Rebekah Lumbert on December 8th, 1698. She was the sister of Mary Lumbert who married his brother, Daniel Parker. "Benjamin Parker probably inherited some of his father's land in Yarmouth, Mass., and was the only one of Robert's sons to settle in that town. Due to the loss of most Yarmouth records not much trace of him remains. He died intestate, and settlement of his estate was made 19 Aug. 1720. Distribution was made to:"Rebecca, the widow relict of Benjamin Parker of Yarmouth deceased" and "to his eldest son, Ebenezer Parker" as well as to his "eight younger children, Jacob, Elisha, Joseph, Thankful, Hannah, Benjamin, Sarah, and Rebecca" (Barnstable Probates, vol.III, pp.546-547)" (Quoted from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 112, October, 1958)

     1. Ebenezer (b.9/1/1699, d.intestate in Rochester, MA 2/24/1783) married 1)Deborah Crowell (b.Yarmouth 10/4/1692, d. abt.1722) and 2)Thankful----(d. Rochester 9/6/1772); eleven children.

     2. Hannah (b.1/2/1700/1, d. March, 1702)

     3. JACOB (b.12/21/1702, d.Yarmouth 6/26/1776) married abt.1725 to Rebecca Tobey (b.abt. 1707, d.3/17/1786 buried in West Yarmouth Cemetery); eight children.

     4. Elisha (b.September, 1704) married in Truro, MA on 12/23/1725 to Prudence Atwood; four children.

     5. Joseph (b.10/1/1706)

     6. Thankful (b.9/16/1708, living in 1720)

     7. Hannah (b.December, 1710) married on 9/23/1731 to David Vickery of Truro, MA

     8. Benjamin (b.November, 1712)

     9. Sarah (b.5/4/1715) married on 11/16/1741 to Lewis Lumbert of Truro, MA

     10. Rebecca (b.5/6/1717) married on 10/9/1746 to Joshua Freeman of Truro, MA

(3.)Jacob Parker married Rebecca Tobey, "daughter of Thomas Tobey, in whose will, dated 10/22/1751, she is named as "my second daughter, Rebecca Parker"(Barnstable Probates, also "Tobey Genealogy" (1905), by R.B.Tobey and Charles H. Pope). The Will of Jacob Parker, dated in Yarmouth 16 Oct. 1771, calls him "Yeoman", gives "to my son Jabez Parker...sons Jacob, Elisha and Benjamin Parker, to my grandsons, Elnathon and Thomas Parker...to my daughters Hannah Bray, ...Rebecca Burgess, ...Desire Collins. and...to my beloved wife Rebecca Parker" (Barnstable Probates, 17, p.345). (Quoted from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 113, p.111, April, 1959). Jacob is buried with his wife at the West Yarmouth Cemetery.

Children of Jacob and Rebecca (Tobey) Parker (all born in West Yarmouth):

     1. Jabez (b.9/27/1726, d.after 10/20/1794) married in Barnstable, MA on 3/28/1750/1 to Sarah Hallett of Barnstable (b.5/28/1733, d.10/20/1794), daughter of David and Mary (Annable) Hallett of Barnstable; twelve children.

     2. Thomas (b.4/9/1729)

     3. Hannah (b.9/19/1731) married abt. 1755 to William Bray

     4. Benjamin (b.3/1/1733/4) married on 9/7/1757 to Mary Snow of Chatham, MA

     5. Rebecca (b.7/26/1737, d.1798) married 4/22/1755 to Benjamin Burgess. He served in the Revolutionary War.

     6. Desire (b. 9/20/1742) married abt. 1765 to Joseph Collins.

     7. Jacob (b.5/11/1746, d. before 12/8/1801) married in Yarmouth on 12/1/1768 to Mary Gorham (b.5/16/1746), daughter of Matthias Gorham.

     8. ELISHA (b.10/21/1747, d.in Ashfield, MA 12/17/1841) married 1)Thankful Marchant on 10/30/1765; seven children, and 2)Deborah Foster in November, 1802. Elisha served in the Revolutionary War "in a series of battles from Bennington to Saratoga"(see article on his son, Rev. Samuel Parker, in the National Encyclopedia of American Biography, 1897, VII, 246).

(4.) Elisha Parker of Yarmouth, MA was married to Thankful Marchant of Yarmouth, on October 30, 1765, and on November 18, 1802 he married his second wife Deborah Foster of Ashfield, MA (died in May, 1830, "ae. 85 yrs."). He and his first wife were great church workers and belonged to the Congregational Church of Yarmouth and by letter on May 28, 1776, the Church at Ashfield, MA. While as a member Mrs. Elisha Parker gave to the church a gift of a Communion Set in 1787. Elisha was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and served as a Private in Cap. Zebulon Norten's Co., Col. John Ashley's (Berkshire Co.) Regt., entered service 7/27/1777, discharged 8/14/1777, also in Lieut. Ephraim Jenning's Co., Col. David Field's (Hampshire Co.) Regt., enlisted 8/17/1777, discharged 8/21/1777, roll dated Ashfield and sworn to at Deerfield; also in Cap. Ephraim Jenning's Co., Col. David Well's Regt. enlisted Sept. 22, 1777, discharged Oct. 18, 1777. Elisha and his two wives are buried in Ashfield. Additional Notes

     1. Rebecca (b. 8/29/1767 at Yarmouth, MA) married on 10/28/1790 to Seth Rogers of Stephentown, NY

     2. SYLVANUS (b. 8/13/1769 at Yarmouth) married on 9/18/1791 to Freelove Mecham of Stephentown, NY; nine children.

     3. Elizabeth (b. abt 1773 at Yarmouth, baptized 5/2/1773 at the Congregational Church, West Yarmouth)

     4. Apphia (b.abt. 1775 at Ashfield, baptized 4/30/1775 at the First Congregational Church, Ashfield, d.1865), married on 4/28/1791 to Heman Marchant of Stephentown, NY.

     5. Thankful (b.1777 at Ashfield, MA, baptized 6/20/1777 at the First Congregational Church, Ashfield, d.1854), married on 10/5/1797 to Dorus Graves (b.1776,d.1850) of Williamsburgh, MA; ten children.

     6. Samuel (b. 4/23/1779 at Ashfield, MA, d. Ithaca, NY 1866) See Biography, married in Ashfield 1)Hepzibah Swan Sears (b.10/16/1783 Harwich, MA d.2/13/1814 Danby, NY) on 2/4/1813 and in 1815, 2)Jerusha Lord (b.1/11/1790 Salisbury, NY d. 5/14/1857 Danby, NY), daughter of Joel and Jerusha (Webster) Lord; three children by second wife.

     7. Thomas (b. abt 1784 at Ashfield, baptized there 5/23/1784 at the First Congregational Church, Ashfield), married abt. 1803 to Priscilla Torrey of Williamsburg, MA; five childen.

(5.) Sylvanus Parker, second child of Elisha and Thankful (Marchant) Parker, of Ashfield, MA, married Lovey (Freelove) Meacham of Stephentown, NY, on September 18th, 1791. He followed farming as an occupation and he and his wife were devoted to the religious faith. He probably died in Ashfield, after 1850. Their children (all born in Ashfield, MA) are as follows:

     2. Prince (b. 10/18/1793) married Anna Marchant of Stephentown on 1/1/1815; he was a stone engraver and was killed while working at his trade.

     3. Triphosa (b.3/20/1796) married Ebenezer Dickinson of Hawley, MA on 8/14/1815; one child

     4. Mercy (b. 2/25/1798) married 1)Rufus W. Graves of Deerfield, MA, in 1821; seven children; 2) John DeWolf.

     5. Elisha (b. 3/30/1800, d. before 12/8/1816)

     6. Thankful (b. 9/30/1802) married Horace Williams of Rhode Island. Four children.

     7. SYLVANUS (b.2/29/1804, and was baptized on 12/12/1816 (Ashfield Congregational Church records.. d.4/4/1871 Bath Township, Allen County, Ohio) married 1) Hannah Hartford; 9 children 2) Rebecca Lippincott (one child from this marriage, who died in infancy)

     8. Heman (b. 8/20/1806) Rev., married Anna Hartford of Rochester, NY abt. 1830, no children.

     9. Freelove (b. 11/20/1808, d.1853 a.45) married 1) David Boydon of Concord, Ma, in 1826; married 2) David L. Rice.
