Map of Lorenzo Hill Hatch's birthplace in Lincoln, Addison, Vermont. Drawn by himself on July 26, 1906 for his son, L. L., and daughter, Nora Savage. Published in Lorenzo Hill Hatch Journal, Ruth Savage Hilton, 1958. Major touch ups by Robert Raymond, 2002.
Potato Hill is known today as Mount Abraham. Acworth [sic] was located at the intersection of the road from Starksboro Village to Bristol Village (Highway 116), and the road to Lincoln. It seems obvious to me that the top of the map corresponds to West. Beyond that, the directions become uncertain, but the most probable to me is East is down, South is left (yes, left), and North is right. Location of the properties mentioned would help fix the directions.
In 1906 I don't know how long it had been since Lorenzo had been in the area. It is possible he made multiple errors laying out the map. But I think it more likely that he made the single error of transposing North and South.
