Early Vermont Maps

by Robert Raymond

A variety of Vermont Map resources are available on the web for genealogical researchers. But they can be hard to find and are often posted in formats difficult to display. In this article, I've posted links to some of the better historical maps available. Since I am researching ancestors in Bristol and Lincoln in Addison county, (Paul RAYMOND and family, 1790 to 1850) I've obtained copies of the more important historical maps of these towns, digitized them, and posted them here. In particular, I've got copies of the important Wallings and Beers maps, which list the names of residents as of 1857 and 1871.

The maps are typically available through a link to the website where they are posted, or through "Large" and "Medium" links to maps on this website. The Medium image is about as wide as your computer screen (you may have to scroll some), and should load in a reasonable amount of time. The Large image may take a very long time to load. It is for high quality printed copies, and for viewing details too small to see in the Medium image. You'll need to scroll a lot to see different parts of the map.

The wonderful thing about Walling's maps is the inclusion of residents' names.

Images of this map are courtesy the Vermont Historical Society. Their map is preserved in sections, which I've attempted to reassemble here. You can see the 2 sections for Bristol township in the 2 photographs.

Map of Lorenzo Hill Hatch's birthplace in Lincoln, Addison, Vermont. Drawn by himself on July 26, 1906 for his son, L. L., and daughter, Nora Savage. Published in Lorenzo Hill Hatch Journal, Ruth Savage Hilton, 1958. Major touch ups by Robert Raymond, 2002.

Potato Hill is known today as Mount Abraham. Acworth [sic] was located at the intersection of the road from Starksboro Village to Bristol Village (Highway 116), and the road to Lincoln. It seems obvious to me that the top of the map corresponds to West. Beyond that, the directions become uncertain, but the most probable to me is East is down, South is left (yes, left), and North is right. Location of the properties mentioned would help fix the directions.

In 1906 I don't know how long it had been since Lorenzo had been in the area. It is possible he made multiple errors laying out the map. But I think it more likely that he made the single error of transposing North and South.

Bristol and Lincoln, 2003.

A detail from the map, "Mid Vermont, For all Seasons," published by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, copyright 2003. Maps by David Carlson, Mark Favreau and Kevin Behm, ACRPC. Brochure design by David Carlson and Mark Favreau.

Adapted for Bristol and Lincoln genealogy research on the internet by Robert Raymond, 2004. I moved the Bristol village map from the reverse side of the brochure to the upper-right corner. I abbreviated and moved the legend to the lower-left corner of the detail. As usual, for legibility I cropped and cramped the medium image more than the large image.
