Special recognition goes to Marion Nagle Rhoads and Janet Snyder Welsh and their book Joachim Nagel and his Descendants published by Mennonite Family History 1990, and to J. E. Sturgis Nagle for his excellent pioneering research on the Nagle family.  Several bound volumes of photocopies of Sturgis Nagle's records are available at the Historical Society of Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Rege is descended from a 'lost' branch of this Nagle family, but a small reference to a Sallyann, daughter of Jacob Nagle in Joachim Nagel and his Descendants revealed a group of ancestors which would have been very difficult to track down otherwise.  Rege has confirmed most of the source material on his direct Nagle family line on this side of the Atlantic but otherwise has, so far, relied mostly on the work of Marion Nagle Rhoads and Janet Snyder Welsh.  For the record, only a small fraction of the descendants of Joachim Nagel listed in their book is enterd into Rege's family file.

Family Origin and Deepest Root

Rege's Nagle family has been traced back to Kefenrod, Oberhessen, Germany, and the oldest proven ancestor is Joachim's father, Johann Heinrich Nagel.  However, according to Joachim Nagel and his Descendants, Joachim's baptismal sponsor, Johann Joachim Nagel, was probably his grandfather.

The Immigrant Ancestor

On September 26, 1749, Joachim Nagel and his family of a wife and four children arrived on the ship "Rainer" at Philadelphia.  The child of Joachim that Rege is descended from, John, was born in America.

The Origin of the Name

The German form of the name is Nagel, which means "nail".  It is uncertain how the word became a surname, but it might have originally been Nagelschmidt or "nail smith", which was sometimes recognized as a separate occupation from Schmidt or "smith".
