JOHN and MAY SHEAN family migrated from Ireland to New York circa 1840. Their children CATHERINE, JEREMIAH, MORRIS, JAMES and ELLEN moved to MA and then California circa 1858.
LEVI COLE migrated from Ireland to Mass in 1826 and then to San Francisco, California circa 1858. He married NANCY ANN MULLEN, a native of Ireland abt 1846 while in Mass. LEVI and his family, and his brother-in-laws family all came out together with the SHEAN boys in tow.
MARY FRANCES COLE the daughter of LEVI married Morris A. SHEAN. Morris was an engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. His brother JAMES was a printer who had his own business in San Francisco. Today, his great- granddaughter Pat lives in the same area. LEVI COLE worked for the Union Foundry in San Francisco. His great-grandaughter Meredyth also lives in the bay area.
There are many interesting stories. The stolen Stradivarius from CHARLES and CAROLINE COLE while on tour in Paris, poor little ROSE who leads an impovished life while her husband and children all die, the successful printer JAMES, and Morris the train engineer who dies a hero.
Unfortunately, many of the records were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and the research is difficult.
I offer my thanks to the other Shean families have been helpful in letting me know who their families are so that I can more easily identify my SHEAN family It is my speculation that most of the Sheans in Calif. may be related in some way. In Calif 1850, there were 3 Shean families. In 1860 there are 11, In 1870 there seem to be about 23 . It seems that one family group went to LA Another family group stayed in SF and the other went to northern CA.
