NEW ZEALAND AND WORLD WAR ONE - ROLL OF HONOUR

NEW ZEALAND AND WORLD WAR ONE
ROLL OF HONOUR

The names in this Roll of Honour have been taken from the book "The Great War — 1914 — 1918 — New Zealand Expeditionary Force Roll of Honour" originally published in 1923 and cross-referenced to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web-site.

The book is divided into three sections, as follows: -

It was found by cross-referencing the two sources that there were names missing from the book, names in the book but not on the CWGC as well as many discrepancies in death dates, Reg. No, spelling of Surname, spelling of Christian Names, as well as some on the CWGC who are listed in the book under different names altogether. These discrepancies are noted on the entries below and have been forwarded on to the Commonwealth War Graves.

Please note that the CWGC cut off date is 01 September 1921 whereas the Roll of Honour book cut off date is 31 December 1923.

DEATH RATE FALLS
The horrific rate at which New Zealand soldiers died in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 may be less than previously thought, new research shows.
Officially 2721 New Zealand soldiers are said to have died as a result of Gallipoli service, from 8556 who served on the peninsula, a rate of 31.8 per cent.
But new research by Hamilton author Richard Stowers suggests 19.8 per cent of New Zealanders lost their lives. He said 2779 New Zealanders died from the 13,977 who served there, 58 and 5421 than first thought. NZPA
