VIEREGGE, VEREGGE, VIERECK
VIEREGGE GUESTHOUSE, KL. GUSBORN, GRMANY
FROM GERMANY about 1865,
ERNST AUGUST HEINRICH VIEREGGE
came to AMERICA. He may been 17 or 18.
We still search for the ship and port records.

ERNST AMERICANIZED HIS NAME BY REMOVING THE "i", THUS THE NAME
VEREGGE
THERE ARE MANY VIEREGGE, VEREGGE, VIERECK and other spellings of the family name in America

All seem to be closely related. In German, VIERECK means square. So Vieregge would be two words; VIER as in four & EGGE as in harrow, (farm tool or scratching of the ground)
There is an accepted version of a Viereck / Vieregge Coat of Arms, given to me while my wife and I were in Germany.

If you are researching the VIERECK/VIEREGGE/VIERECK name, I invite you to join the family ROOTSWEB list and ask any questions of the other family researchers already on line. To get started, simply CLICK BELOW on your choice of spelling:

OK, So THIS IS THE STORY OF OUR BRANCH OF VIEREGGE.

Some think our Vieregge line is about to run out. I have one grandson and he is the last of our male line. BUT there was a line of male children that were left in Germany and we are not sure what happened to them. More about them later.

My wife and I visited Germany in May of 2000 where ERNST was raised by his father Johann C. W. Vieregge and mother Eleonore D. C. Crumasel. As far as we know, he had two older brothers and two sisters.

This was in the small country town of Kl. Gusborn, about 70 miles East of Hamburg and very near the Elbe River. Dannenberg is the closest town of size 5 miles west. WEB SITE of Dannenberg (Elbe) For ENGLISH, click on American flag & next page click on the BRITISH flag

  • So what you will get here is a little bit family history, a little bit story telling and some genealogy thrown in.

  • In the beginning of this millennium we found our cousins in Germany and a cousin in the United States who came much later to America. What a wonderful way to start the year 2000. We are adding many new cousins and learning about our roots.

    • This is what little we know. Stay tuned.

    1. Widow Marie Elisabeth Vieregge. "who marries 2nd husband Webs" Widow Marie was born about 1760. (my note: Who is Web and any connection to the Web who wrote about the Vieregge family?)

    • Widow Marie had two Children that we know of.

    i. Johann Christian Wilhelm Vieregge (father of our Ernst)
    ii.Johann Jurgen Vieregge;

    • Johann Christian Wilhelm Vieregge (father of our Ernst) was Born 11 Oct 1797 Germany. Died 30 Jul 1872 age 74.
    He married Eleonore Dorothee Catarina CRUMASEL, 6 Nov 1821 in Marriage contract. Wedding date not known. She was born 8 Feb 1809 in Germany. (Was she only 12, going on 13? Did this have anything to do with her father passing on to her a family Inn that later became known as The Vieregge Guesthouse, or do we have the dates wrong)

    Johann Christian's wife was the Eleonore Dorothee C. CRUMASEL, the daughter of Johonn Christian CRUMASEL, mother Anne Cathrine Crumasel. Anna was born about 1769, died 1849 at age 80.

    They had the following children that we know of;

    i. Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Vieregge (more on Johann later, the first born)

    ii. Anne Magdalene Dorothee Vieregge; Born 26 Feb 1825, Christen 1 Mar 1825. Anne Magdalene D. married Johann Jurgen Heinrich Christopf SCHRADER, son of Johann SCHRADER & Marie Elisabeth Maidennane PENGEL.

    iii. Catherine Henrietta Elis Vieregge; Born 10 Sep 1830. Christen 12 1830
    Catherine Henrietta E. married Johann Joachim Jurgen August GRESS, son of Jurgen August GRESS & Anne Elisabeth Maidennam WEBS. 15 Nov 1850 (there's that WEB name again)

    iv. Johann August Henrich Vieregge (more on August leaving family behind to come to America 1887)

    v. Ernst August Heinrich Vieregge (more on our Ernst, my grandfather)

    • HERE IS FIRST BORN FROM ABOVE, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Vieregge. I recently learned of his children.

    3. Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Vieregge. Born 10 Oct 1822. Married Cathern Elisabeth RUTHER, 21 May 1845 in Marriage.
    They had the following children:

    i. August Wilhelm Vieregge: He married Catharinen Louise STAHLBOCK 1872.
  • Their children; Johan August Wilhelm Rudolf Vieregge who married Elisbeth Maria Dorothee Luise PROHL on 21 May 1898. Their children, Walter, Antonia (died as a child) and Albert. (Albert married Elisabeth LOHMANN (2 died 1944) and are the parents of our new found cousins)
  • Herman Vieregge, died in WW 1 - hit by grenade
    ii. Ida Vieregge;

    iii. Wilhelmine Vieregge;

    • Following is Johann August, my grandfather's other brother who came to America. His side is another story and will require more research. Here is what we know, or suspect to know.

    4. We know that Johann August Henrich Vieregge was born 5 Sep 1837 in Klien Gusborn, Germany. Died 17 Aug 1917 in Rochester, MO infirmary. Buried 19 Aug 1917 "at Savannah" MO. Notes say he was 12 years in German army.

    The story we heard was that August left a wife and 3 boys in Germany when he immigrated to the United States. A letter from Germany addressed to my grandfather dated sometime before 1903 translates:

    Liebe Onkel.
    Dear Uncle, I am not doing well, I have lost my hearing almost completely; I have no joy anymore on this world, but I must trust in God.
    Just before his death, your brother Wilhelm thought that you and August would be dead also. We also believed this.
    Write us what you and August are doing. His wife is a cleaning lady in the Hanover hospital. She is earning good money. Her oldest son has his own shop, he is a locksmith, and is doing well. One son is a baker, learnt his trade here in Dannenberg. The third is a shoemaker, he has also learnt his trade in Dannenberg.
    Jürgen Maatsch says Hello,
    Sheidel

    • While we were in Germany, we looked at Church records in Quickborn where family records were found. We did find a son listed as Theodor August Wilhelm Julius Vieregge, born 30 Nov 1888 Christen in Quickborn Church. But August was in the St. Joseph Missouri Directory by 1887. So, I am thinking the 1888 should of been read as 1886?
    • Also listed were two girls that most likely were his. One Anna Maria Luise Julie Vieregge, born 24 Mar 1880 AND Maria Elise Ida Betty Vieregge, born 1 Jan 1883.

      We also found in the city of Dannenberg records of August being a school teacher in Siemen just beyond (?) Gusborn.

      And then there is Germans to America lists of passengers: Vol 54, Jan 1887 (8-8420-2617-7)pg 392: ship: Main, from Bremen to Baltimore, arrived 21 June 1887 Vieregge, Aug. 50 male, Labr, GRZZZZ, USA. (right age)
      The records list a Johann Aug. Heinrich in 15 Nov 1873 married Catharina Maria Elisabeth LAU. (August would have been 36 & this would seem right after he spent 12 years in the Army)
    • We did not find the other two sons, but the book was not well researched, or easy to read.

    • NOW, Below is ERNST, my Grandfather. I never met him. I was not born until 1930.
