Notes for ALEXANDER MITCHELL:
Mr. Mitchell, as he was called by the family, owned a candy store in Columbus, GA. It was located on lower Broad St.  He invented a candy called "Dixie Chip"  It was a delicious pink candy with little raw peanuts.  The candy was made on a very large marble top table which was at least 4" thick. This table was later stored in the basement of his son, Evans' home.  Dixie Chip,  was a favorite of the whole family as well as many people in the towns of Columbus and Phenix City, Alabama.  There were articles in the local newspapers about his wonderful store.  He also had a peanut roaster.  As one article, "Our Town", written by, W. C. Woodall, July 27, 1966, stated; "Mr. Mitchell's place was down Broad Street a bit, where Mc Lendon's is now, and it was a marvelous store.  It had row upon row of big shiny candy jars ranged in the shelves, with everything from imported German candies with little flowers in them to glistening licorice  "snakes," as we called them.  But the most wonderful contraption was the peanut roaster, which incidentally, Evans A. Mitchell still has on display.  It was a little glass case, with heat coming from someplace below,  and Mr. Mitchell would sit and patiently turn the wheel that kept the peanuts rolling over and over, and toasting to such a flavor as no peanut has had since!  You could get a mighty big sack of those for a nickel."

After Alex's death, his son Evans, took over the care of the store. In later days, Evans could not get the tiny peanuts used in the Dixie Chip.  It was so popular, people would come asking for it.  Evans would have to order the nuts from Texas by the bushel. Even after his retirement and after the store was closed, in 1958, people would still come to Evans and ask him to make his father's wonderful candy. Which he would do until his health no longer allowed it.  After his death the house was sold. The tables, which were to large to move, were left in the house and remain there to this day.

Alex Mitchell's original name was; Alexis Mahalakakes.  He changed it when he immigrated to the United States.
