3. ROBERT3 ZANE, JR. (ROBERT2, SIMON1) was born March 29, 1642 in Yorksham, Devonshire, England, and died March 01, 1694/95 in Newton, Gloucester Co, NJ. He married (1) MARGARET HAMMOND September 1664 in Dublin, Ireland, daughter of THOMAS HAMMOND and GRACE. He married (2) ALIS ALDAY April 10, 1679 in Burlington, NJ. He married (3) ELIZABETH WILLIS 1681 in Flushing, Long Island, New York, daughter of HENRY WILLIS and MARY PEASE.

Baptized in the Church of St. John the Baptist 29 March 1642 in Yorksham, Devonshire, England.
Was among the earliest Quakers. Believed to have made three trips to America.
1st trip on the ship "Mary of Salem" landing in New York in 1673.
2nd trip on the ship "Griffin" with Fenwick's Colony in Elsinburra, then up to Salem, NJ in 1675.
3rd trip on the ship "Mary of Dublin" landing at Elsinburra, NJ from Dublin in 1677.

Robert Zane was of English Parentage, possibly mixed with Danish, from his native Yorkshire, he traveled to Ireland where he married his first wife Margaret Hammond at Dublin. A Sergemaker by trade and a Quaker by profession. Robert Zane was in contact with William Penn and John Fenwick when they were looking toward the founding of a Quaker Colony in New Jersey.

Robert Zane built a house in Salem, New Jersey at the junction of York and Fenwick roads. In his travels as a woodsman he became quite conversant with the ways and language of the Unami and Undachtigo Indians.

In 1686 Robert Zane was ordered by the Court to provide Rebecca Hammond (ex-indentured servant) with clothing for her and the child he fathered out of wed-lock. He agreed to do so.
