Elizabeth "Betty" Zane, was born 19 July 1759, in Moorefield, Westmoreland Co. Virginia
She died 23 August 1823, in St. Clairsville, Belmont Co, Ohio
Elizabeth Zane is buried, along with her brother, Col. Ebenezer Zane, in the Old Pioneer Section of Walnut Grove Cemetery. Martin Ferry, Belmont Co, Ohio

The school children of the area collected money to have a statue of Betty Zane placed at the entrance of the cemetery

There are many stories of Betty on the internet, but it is accepted by the DAR that she was a heroine at the battle of Ft. Herry, in Wheeling, Virginia. (Now West Virginia)
DAR Lineage Book states she:
"Rendered service 9/12/1782 in the capacity of ammunition bearer at the "second siege"** of Fort Henry. Elizabeth secreted gunpowder in her apron and ran past the unsuspecting enemies to the defenders of the fort, who were out of ammunition."

Her brother, Col. Ebenezer Zane is an ancestor of the famous Western Writer, Zane Gray
