Notes for ELIZABETH "BETTY" ZANE:
Elizabeth lived on a farm west of Martin's Ferry between Buckeye and Glenn's
Run.
Buried in Pioneer Cemetery Section of Walnut Grove Cemetery, Martin' Ferry,
Belmont Co. OH.
Betty Zane had an illegitimate daughter, Miriam Zane by Van Swearigen. There are
court records in Ohio Co., VA in which Van Swearigen is ordered to deed some
property to Betty, evidently in order that the illegitimate daughter would be
provided for and not become a burden on the county.
Betty Zane and the Battle of Fort Henry:
In the early Autumn of 1782 a sudden alarm was given by John Lynn that a large
body of Indians were advancing to attack the Fort. There were at the time, no
soldiers and no public stores in the place. Col. Ebenezer Zane (Betty's brother)
living in a blockhouse adjacent to the Fort, thought it best to send most of his
family into the Fort as the safest place, and it would require a less number of
men to defend the blockhouse. Col. Zane had a supply of ammunition in the
blockhouse, but the Fort had very little. After the attack commenced, there was
a boat that came down the river with four men well armed who succeeded in
getting into the Fort. This was crucial, for there were few men and many women
and children in the Fort.
After the siege had lasted one full day and night, the morning of the second day
found the Fort short of powder. The question was how to get powder from the
blockhouse. It was thought a woman should go for it would be less of a loss than
a man. Betty said "let me go as I shall be of small loss if they do kill me, and I am swift of foot anyway, and strong, so that I can carry much powder as we want". So it was arranged for her to go. They called over to the blockhouse to be ready to open the door, and away she went.
The Indians surprised cried out "Squaw! Squaw! but did not shoot, and she got
over safe.
Molly Scott put upon her a linsey petticoat, turned it up and sewed it into a
bag, and then filled it with powder, as much as she could carry. She started
back, the Indians figured out what she was carrying and opened fire upon her,
the bullets whistling around her, one of them tearing a hole in the petticoat,
but no bullet touched her. She got to the Fort safely, and they had the powder
to open fire with their cannon of which the Indians were much afraid.
So Betty Zane's heroic dash helped to win what proved to be the American
Revolution's last battle.

Notes for COL. EBENEZER ZANE:
The three Zane bothers, Ebenezer, Silas, and Jonathan, made the firstsettlement in the Wheeling area in 1769.
Ebenezer Zane laid out the town of Wheeling in 1793.
The name Wheeling was taken from the Indian word "weeling", meaning place of the
skull. The earliest Europeans in the neighborhood were said to have been killed
and their skulls placed on poles in the area to warn away other invaders.
The historic Zane's Trace, built by Ebenezer Zane and opened in 1797, extended
from Wheeling, WV through present day Zanesville OH (named in his honor) to
Maysville KY, which was then the northern end of the road to New Orleans. By
1810, one fourth of the population of the state was said to live in the counties
along this road.
