Children of Andreas & Margaret

1: Johannes William (ALK) Casselman, b. 1720 at Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co., NY, m. Anna Margaretha Castleman nee ???, 1743 at Frederick Co. (now Clarke Co.), VA, d. 1808 at Washington Co., PA.

note: There is no proof that Johannes William is the Johannes listed by Pastor Sommer but all indications show that he is. In the Palatine Countries of this era, it was common to name most male children after the father and females after the mother, hence the Johannes and Anna'in all the names, this practice was continued to some extent by the first generations of immagrants in the New World and though no record to that effect have been found, it is very likely that Andreas was Actually Johannes Andreas Lodewich. Johannes William being the first male child of Andreas would then be called Johannes (John) and the other male children would be called by their second names, i.e. Jacob, Lewis and David; the first female would use the name Anna and all subsequent female siblings would revert to their second names, i.e. Elisabetha, Sophia.

The powers that be in the New World at the time were predominatly English and because "All those damn Deutchmen/Dutchmen are named Johannes, Hans or John"; the majority of the time, especially on legal papers, only the middle name was used. This is also how the name Casselman became Castleman on the land grants Andreas, William and David received from Lord Fairfax of Virginia. Many of the old ways were being trampled on and discarded.

[His 2nd wife] Mary nmn Bush, m. Andreas Lodewick (JDK) Casselmann 1761 at VA.

note: Mary Bush first married a ??? Wallace about 1750 and they had four children, two sons and two daughters. Mr. Wallace was killed by Indians. Mary then married secondly to Joseph Hancock and they had a son, Joseph Hancock Jr., Mr Hancock was listed as a witness in Andreas' murder trial and he was subsequently killed by Indians also. Andreas was her third husband and even though he lived to the age of 90, she survived him too. Mary died a widow at the age of 108.
