COOTEHILL

Pg. 375-376

Transcribed by Jan Richardson.
Following is the full entry, with original spellings and grammar, for the town of
Cootehill, County Cavan, Ulster.

In the county of Cavan, is a neat town, 52 miles north west of Dublin, 12 south of Monaghan, 12 north east of Cavan, 10 south east of Clones, and 7 south west of Ballibay. It stands on a river of the same name, and contiguous to it is Belmount Forest, the beautiful demesne of Charles Coote, esq. which, being well wooded, contributes much to the appearance of the town. The staple trade is the manufacture of linen sheeting, which is deservedly held in great estimation throughout Ireland. Here are seven places of public worship, namely, a new well built church at the lower extremity of the town, of which the Rev. James Hamilton is rector; two Presbyterian chapels, a Roman Catholic, a Methodist, and a Moravian chapel, and a Quakers' meeting house. General sessions are held twice a year. The regular weekly market on Friday is plentifully supplied with provisions of all kinds from the adjacent country, which is well cultivated. Fairs are held on the 12th of March, the 9th of June, the 12th of September, and the 6th of December. The population is upwards of 1000.

POST OFFICE, Market-street. - Post Mistress, Miss Mary Wallace. The Dublin Mail is despatched [sic] at five in the evening in the Summer and at four in the Winter, and arrives at eight in the morning. The Virginia and Stradone mails arrive and depart with the Dublin mail. Letters for England go by the Dublin mail, and those for Scotland by Donaghadee.
