INFORMATION REGARDING THE TABLE OF SLAVES AGE 100 AND UP
For the 1860 slave schedules, census enumerators were instructed to provide the names of all slaves age 100 years or more. Because there was no particular place to write a slave name on the census form, the enumerators wrote the names in a variety of places, including the same column with the slaveholder, the age column, and the other columns or the margins at either side or at the bottom of the page.
The Decennial Digest reports there were 1,570 slaves age 100 and up on the 1860 slave schedules. Using the 1860 slave census index at Ancestry online [subscription required], I have found 1,555, which are included in the table. The Ancestry index erroneously reports several additional slaves as over age 100; but a view of the census image revealed the error and they are not included in the table.
Two thirds, 901, of these senior slaves were female, with 654 being male. Black was the reported color for 1,475, with 80 being reported as mulatto. Some obviously incredible ages were reported, the oldest being 150 years for an unnamed slave in Monroe County, MS. The oldest named slave was 135 year old Phillis, held in Wilkinson County, MS. Of five 130 year old slaves reported, 3 were named, as were 4 of the 13 reported 125 year olds and 17 of the 26 reported 120 year olds.
I found that just under half of the slaves that were supposed to have their names recorded actually were named, 717 of 1,555, or 46%. Usually only the first name of the slave was written, but for 35 of the slaves, a full name was written including a surname different from the slaveholder surname.
The most common first names, including variations, with the number found were: Nancy 18, Mary 17, Jenny 15, Jack 15, Lucy 15, Hannah 14, Rose 13, Rachel 12, Betty 11, Milly 11, Sally 11, John 10, Phillis 10, Sarah 9, Amy 9, Ben 9, Peter 8, and Pompey 8. Five women were aptly named Patience. Four names were prefaced with Aunt, but none with Uncle.
About one out of fourteen of these senior slaves (113 of the 1,555) were the only slave reported by the slaveholder, possibly indicating some longevity in the household and associated feeling of responsibility on the part of the slaveholder, rather than just lack of marketability of the slave. Only a small handful of these were reported as mulatto, so blood relation is not likely in most cases.
Several of these slaves had additional biographical data recorded by a census enumerator who showed particular interest. This additional information included such things as African birth, historical remembrances involving the Revolutionary War, particularly good health and possibly information on number of children. All such additional comments are included in the remarks column of the table.
