Jessie's childhood

Grandpa was born 1871 in Jobe Township in Oregon Co., Missouri. He was the first son and second child of Caleb Jobe and Martha Emily Brewer. More than likely, he was named after his two grandfathers - Jessie Jobe and William McIntire.

In 1876, as a young boy of 5, he moved with his parents to Lebanon, Collin Co., Texas where he lived until about 1889. On the 1880 census, he was listed as William Jessie.

Then at the age of 18, he moved with his parents to Rayland, Hardeman Co., Texas where his father, Caleb, was a rancher.

After becoming an adult, he was always known as Jessie.

My Grandfather - Jessie's Tombstone

In April 1919, when Daddy was 3 months old, Grandpa Jesse Jobe died in the flu epidemic that quickly spread across the U.S. and worldwide - killing thousands.

Entrance to Thalia Cemetery

Jessie was buried at the Thalia Cemetery with a Woodman tombstone. His parents, son Walter and father-in-law, G. W. Mears, would also be buried at Thalia.

My Grandmother - Minnie (Mears) Jobe

Young Widow
Family Struggles to Survive

After Jesse's death, she struggled to survive and bring her family to maturity. In 1929, she would lose her son, Walter. These were lean tough times, but she survived and the family was fed and clothed.

From listening to the many stories, I've never heard of anyone doing without any of the necessities - food, water, love or shelter. In the latter years of his life, her father lived very near her or in the same household.
