Heirlooms of Jobe Descendants and their Families

Most of us have things we treasure that belonged to our Father or Mother, and then we have things that have been handed down through the years and kept in the families such as things that were bought or handmade.

This site is dedicated to those ancestors that passed things that meant a lot to them through the years. To perserve them even more Ann and I have created this page to keep the memory alive.

If you have a family treasure that you would like to share with us, please send a picture along with a story that you can share about the treasure to Ann (Jobe) Brown or Freida Wells .

Myrtle's Stereo Opticon Stereo

Myrtle's Stereo Optigon

In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when photography began, stereo was also introduced. Prints from a double-lens camera were mounted on thick cards. The viewer had two lenses and a sliding card holder that could be moved forward and back to focus. The hooded portion was held up to the eyes and blocked extraneous light from entering. A handle underneath could be folded down to hold the viewer. The cards measured 3-1/2 inches by 7 inches. Hundreds and hundreds of these were produced on a variety of subjects and in world-wide locations. Some cards were colored by hand. Others were translucent and could be held up to the light for viewing. This was my Grandmother's toy...likewise my Father and Aunt, then the grandchildren. I could actually sit still and quiet with this for 5-6 minutes. The 70 or so cards in the picture date from 1899-1904.

Myrtle's Jacob Ladder Quilt

And he [Jacob] dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed....-- Genesis 28: 12-13 (KJV)

Myrtle's Jacob Ladder Quilt

Did you know that the original Jacob's ladder, which reached to heaven, wasn't a ladder at all?

In a vision, he beholds "angels of God" mounting and descending a stairway or ramp, in Hebrew sullam and improbably translated as "ladder" in the King James Version. The angels, imagined to be roughly the size and shape of human beings, would have had a hard time climbing up and down a ladder all at once, as they are described doing. More likely, sullam refers to a stone-cut stairway (a common sight in the ancient Near East), or perhaps even to the graduated face of a ziggurat.

Now look at Grandma's Quilt. You can see it doesn't resemble a ladder at all. It looks more like steps. She made this quilt in the late 70's. It was one of about 100 quilts she made by herself during her long life.
