"An autopsy is being held this afternoon at the undertaking rooms of Walley & Rollins on the body of Monroe Jobe, age 42, who died yesterday at St. Luke's Hospital. Jobe's death was the result of a blow on the head, received at Fort Steele, Wyoming two weeks ago yesterday, which was the 4th of March 1898. Robert Grooms, a liveryman of Fort Steele is under arrest charged with the murder of Jobe. Dr. H.M. Bennett and Attorney Homer Merrill arrived form Wyoming this morning to witness the autopsy. Mr. Merrill represents Grooms. Robert Jones, a former employee of Jobe, has been here several days. According to Messers. Jones and Merrill, the killing was to be a great extent justifiable. dr. H.M. Bennett, represents the Coroner of Carbon Co.,, Wyoming. The bad feeling between the two men dates back several months. A friend of Jobes fell down and injured himself. Jobe took him to a restaurant and saloon. While in there he got into a conversation with a woman. While talking to her a young son of Grooms brought in a pitcher of milk and delivered it to the proprietor. Jobe who was drunk commanded the boy to get out of the place, 'its no place for boys like you he said.' The boy hesitated; Jobe got up from the table and ran at the boy as if to kick him. The boy fled. Last Tuesday Jobe told a friend at the hospital that he had not kicked the boy when he tried to. This episode incurred the ill feeling of the boy's father who is nearly 60 years old. He did not, however, resent the affair at that time, on Feb 17, 1898. Jobe and some friends were in a saloon drinking, Jobe had sold out his interest in the sheep business and was preparing to go to the Klondike, Grooms came into the saloon, 'come up you ___ and drink with me, I know you have no use for me but you can take a drink.' Grooms does not drink and refused. A few unpleasant words passed. About fifteen minutes afterward, Jobe was standing outside the house at a hydrant, when Grooms came out. Jobe cursed him again, threatening to throw water on him. One word brought on another. No one saw the occurrence but Jobe told the story before he died. The victim fell unconscious to the ground. He was removed the following Monday to this city and placed in St. Luke's Hospital. He rallied at timed but died yesterday morning. His skull was fractured. The autopsy is being conducted by Dr. Eskridge, his deposition will be taken for use at the inquest which will be held in Wyoming upon the return of the party from here."
