A story is told about Rebel soldiers coming to his house and asking for food and horses. He fed them and asked that they not take his food and horses as he was a very sick man and could not work to make a living. They asked about the horses in the pasture next to his and he said they weren't his. They left taking those horses.

This original photo taken just after the death of Elzina in 1936 was sent to Randy by Michael Ford. Michael writes:
Was going through some old photos and found this. Thought you might be interested. It is the head stone for Samuel N. Ford with, what appears, the fresh grave of Elzina. What got my attention and wanted you to see was the condition of the Mt. Polland graveyard. Looks like something like Boothill in old movies. It sure looks much different today.Randy writes:
I want to tell you a few observations I've made. The angle the pic was taken...as I recall, when you are looking at the front of their stones, you are looking at the road and church. So looking beyond the fence corner in this picture is where they put the trailer today for all the food during decoration. This confirms some other pics I have seen where there is a buffer of trees between the road and the cemetery. If you can make a picture in your mind, the original church was about 200 yards further out the road where the land rises at a rock outcrop and faced the cemetery...back towards the Wolford Moore place. This is not the fresh grave of Elzina. She died in January and the trees and bushes have leaves. This was probably taken on First Sunday. Also, the yucca plants haven't bloomed yet...that usually happens in July in Kentucky. She probably didn't get her stone until after crops came in. But then again...unless your Grandfather was farming, only Dow was making a living at it at the time. Avery was always poor and the other 2 had probably moved on by this time. Dickie Hammer probably pitched in.
The practice of mounding is still being used in this pic. Before decoration celebration, the graves were filled in and mounded for the year. I've even seen cloth spread on the mound for the day. Some of our Rhoton kin still do it. If you look close you can see deer tracks on Elzina's grave, and the way the ground is broken, it has rained since the mounding.
One more thing about the angle...in the center of the cemetery you remember there are no stones to speak of today. And there were none in 1936 either it seems, even though there is mounding going on. Those are the graves some of our kin buried there from 1850 to about 1890. Before Chloe Ford passed away last year, she passed on to her neice Libby some of the names of those buried in those 3 rows...but she wasn't sure of all the locations.
Libby is currently making 8 gravestones to place on the unmarked graves and Doug Rush (current President of the Mt. Poland Cem. Association) is going to place them for her. I furnished her with as many dates as I knew.
One important stone she is making is for George Jobe. I was shown his gravesite 34 years ago and never forgot the location or story that went with his burial. Libby will be making more stones as she has time.
