REGARDING BIRTH YEAR:
Though death certificate gives her birth as 1860, was confirmed also by her mother as being in 1861. This was done in 1870 for a pension application.Mike Ford also writes:
In Bill Ford's files under Sheffields is a Witness Testimony by Rebecca Richards stating that she was in the room ,was eye witness, and acted as midwife in the birth of Elizna C. Sheffield on 25th. day of February, 1861 in Barren Co., Ky.I guess this is about as close to a birth record as we can probably get. This was to apply for Army Pension Claim by Elizabeth Sheffield for Minor child. If a birth record had existed they probably would not have needed this witness testimony."

Letter from Michael Ford
I found this many years ago in Frankfort when the history files were located in the old State Capitol Annex Building. These were on 3x5 cards. As I understand, Kentucky required doctors to record births & deaths for a few years in the mid 1850s until it was stopped during the civil war. It wasn't required again until 1911. These cards were from that recording times.I copied the spelling just as they were written. It appears that my Sheffields moved to Barren county before 1858.Matilda Sheffield - Clinton Co.- 12-25-1853 father: S.D.
