JOB(E) LEGACY
Descendants of Andrew Job Jr
John's son, Elisha, had a Bible that was passed down to his daughter Minnie Jobe Hayes, who died after 1948 in Kentucky. The Bible did not list siblings Sarah and Luvina.
MY NOTE (Ann):Sarah was born after John and Priscilla seperated. Sarah, however, did marry with the Jobe surname. Was she actually a Meeks?
Luvina was born after Priscilla married John Meeks and she did use the Meeks surname.
Hi Ann, Our family had an old legend as well concerning Mr. Jobe and I have been able to verify nearly all of it. John's father was also a Johnathon ,who moved to Lawrence Co .Ky.,before 1830,from Russel Co.Va. He was born in 1775 in Tenn. He married Elizabeth Cooksey b.N.C. abt.1873.They were most likely married in Virginia. Elizabeth died before the 1850 census in Lawrence Co. ky ,and most believe Johnathon died the same year.He was counted in that census, living with a family, probably one of his daughters. In 1826 young John married Percilla Young in Huntinton Virginia (now W.V.) and they had at least 7 children that carry his name although the last one is probably not his.
Percilla was the daughter of Robert Young who also came from Va to the lawrence co. area.He had a son named Harrison (william Harrison Young b.1810) who married Mahala J. Castle around 1830-1836 and this couple had a least 3 children .The last born was Robert Hood Young b.!840. Harrison and Mahala are my g. g. grandparents. According to a local news article when Robert Hood was about 18 months old , Mahala "ran off" with her brother -in-law John Jobe ,Percilla's husband. They both left all their kids in Kentucky and as you know settled in Adams Co. ohio
One thing of note I have not been able to find a death record for young John, but Mahala died in 1903 and is buried in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Meigs Twp Adams Co. Ohio. Her Birth year on the stone is 1809, but that is wrong by abt.4 years. Also her name is spelled Mahalah. The stone is still standing and readable. Buried there is a son Sylvester, his wife Sarah and several Grandchildren. ... . . .Isn't this a strange story? I know it's all true. The Robert you guys talk about being left behind is Mahala's child Robert Hood and the Mary "Polly" Who was left to care for him was Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Burton Who became Harrison Young's second wife in 1850. She was a friend not a daughter.

MY NOTE (Ann):Jack (a descendant of Mahala Castle and William Harrison Young) explained this mysterious family incident, full of unanswered questions, much better than I ever could have, therefore, I've posted most of his letter, above.
On the 2 Mahalas; our Mahala can not be the daughter of Zedekiah and Ann (Penix ) Castle. That one was born in 1818,and married Alfred Bowen in 1836 Lawrence co Records. Ann(Penix )Castle went to live with them after Zedekiah died. Our Mahala was living with Harrison Young in the 1830 census age given as 15-19,she is pretty consistant with date of birth being 1811-1815 until the last one where it is estimated at 1809. I think thats just wrong. These folks did not read or write and the census relied on what the person told them of course. No birth or death records were kept in the years before 1830 in Kentucky for the most part and where they were, they weren't accurate.Percilla and John's last child was Mary, b. 5 Jul.1839. Sarah Ann was not Johns but most likely Meeks .Percilla was granted a divorce shortly after and married Meeks ,They had one other child for sure.
Robert H Young was the child 'left in Virginia in the care of Mary Polly' and was the last child born in kentucky to Mahala, with one possible exception,. News article in 1898 said he was off visiting his mother in Ohio whom he hadn't seen in 58 years.
Robert was my Gr Grandfather. His son Francis (Frank )was my mother's father and Robert was living with him in the 1900 census. Mother passed away about 2 years ago and her recall was amazing right up to her death.S o here is what I know to be fact:
. . .
- Robert found out where his mother was in 1897 and went to see her in 1898. She was Mahala Jane Castle.
- Percilla Young Jobe was the wife of John Jobe of Lawrence and Floyd Co, KY.
- Mahala and John ran off together 1n 1841 or 42 ,and they are without doubt the same as the people in Adams Co. Ohio.
- John and Mahala have a daughter Lucinda b. Apr 1841. So Mahala had one in the oven or Lucindas parentage is in doubt.
- Either way the Jobes most likely never married and probable arrived in Adams Co with a young girl or very pregant,so passed as married.
- Mother also remembered being told that Mahala was of at least 50% Indian, Zedekiah was 1/2 Shawnee so I know the 2 Mahalas are related either Aunt and neice, or First cousins. By process of elimination I have narrowed it to 2 . The Castles were in Floyd Co early as was Johnathon Jobe Sr.
- Harrison remarried in 1850 a Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Burton who he lived with for several years and had a number of children with they used the Burton name until the marriage and the Young name after. Altogether Harrison had over 20 Documented children.
- Harrison and Polly are Buried on Irish Creek. Robert and Wife are Buried In the Hannah Cemetery in Lawrence Co.I have a photo of Robert's home which was stil being used in the late 1950's.
- One last thing ,the' Mary Polly left behind to care for Robert was Mary Polly Burton who became Harrisons 2nd wife,I would imagine that story came about after Roberts visit to his mother in 1898.
Jack
MY NOTE (Ann):Everything that I could check out that Jack says above, has proven to be true.
After the seperations:
---ALL the Jobe children stayed with Pricillia (mother) and all the Young children with Mahala stayed with William Harrison Young (father). John and Mahala then started a THEIR OWN FAMILY in Adams Co., Ohio.
-land records show that John Jobe received a grant of 100 acres on Big Blaine Creek and 50 acres on Daniel's Creek
John JOBE*Lawrence Co., KY is on the West Virginia border
The latter grant (50 acres on Daniel's Creek) was surveyed on 19 Apr 1836, therefore it seems reasonable to assume that the separation or divorce between John and Precilla occurred between Apr 1836 and the 1840 census.

MY NOTE (Ann):Who exactly is her father?
----Priscillia Young and John Jobe had seperated BEFORE the 1840 Lawrence Co., KY Census.
----Could her father be John Meeks?
----Elisha Wellman Jobe did NOT list her, along with Luvina, as a sibling
----1850 census does list her as Jobe
----She married with Job surnameSince she used the Jobe surname, I have listed her as a Jobe descendant Here
