Research of Bevely Nilsson

Harriet (Hattie) Southwood b. prob. late 60s or 186l. Although some think she was born in 1845 in Andrew Co. MO, that could not be so in view of the fact that in the 1870 census, taken July 30, 1870, she was living in San Francisco, a few doors away from her sister Cynthia Anderson. She was listed as 10 years old, born in California. She was living in the household of a wealthy liquor dealer from Turkey, Luis Metick. Harriet was attending school and may have helped out in the store or home in return for room and board. After the death of her mother in 1862, Harriet was probably cared for by her sister Cynthia in San Francisco, until she was old enough to go into service. Due to her circumstances, Harriet was probably forced to be fairly independent from a young age."

Harriet had a scrapbook contained poetry, and articles involving her career, and her family. This is where we get the majority of information about her.

The title page of her scrapbook said: HATTIE SOUTHWOOD MISCELLANEOUS BOOK. This name was formed with fancy gummed-backed letteres. The Southwood name had beeen taken off at some time and Elwes had replaced it. The original letters had been gold, the ELWES leters were flowered. On the flyleaf of Hatties prayer book the date 8 Aug 1878 appears as shown below.

Hattie was an actress in the variety shows, both in San Francisco and Washington. Following is one of the notices from her scrapbook. There were never any dates on these clippings.

Miss Hattie Southwood
In a couple of the notices grandpa's name would appear, when they needed a child, he would be listed as "Young Charlie Southwood".

It has been passed on by my grandpa (Beverley's grandfather) that Alfred ran out on Hattie, and she later married John Bird. Although we can find no adoption records for John adopting Charles Elwes, grandpa changed his name to Bird in 1900. The same year Harriet, his mother, died.

In 1955 My father (Beverleyl's father) Claude Bird, in answer to a query, received a letter from the Spokane Chamber of Commerce stating---Mrs. Hattie Southwood Bird passed away at the age of 38 years. The date and place of burial was March 8, 1900, Fairmount Memorial Park. The lot was purchased by Charles E. Kirby.
