My Note:
Occassionally Southward would get Southwood This probably had something to do with pronunciation and spelling phonetically. I've used Southward as it seems to be the one most used today and after their arrival in Texas. However, if researching this family - please be aware of the Southwood spelling - especially in the early generations.

"James C. and Martha Southward came to Montague to visit his brother, Iredell. James C. and Martha died a day apart in 1879. Iredell was killed by a family member in 1881. In 1868 William Southward married Mary J. Magee in Cooke Co.,. (MY NOTE (Ann) - We have since discovered this to be the s/o Thomas Southward - James brother) We found a small burial place and people around the area called it Southward-Magee/McGee. Most was unmarked, but found James C. and Iredell Southward and about 4 Magee. James C. and Martha Southward's 2 children came with them and stayed here. I found a J. Southword 31 and Nancy with 3 children in Fannin Co.,. Don't know if this is the same John who was with them in Peter Colony. Iredell married Nancy Caroline Roberts in 1841 in Andrew Co., MO. "

"James and Martha on way to Wichita Falls to visit Iradel at Forestburg, they took sick and died. Buried in joint grave in Forestburg. James died 28 Mar 1879 and Martha died 23 Mar 1879."
My Note:
Though there is some disagreement in James and Martha's death dates, they obviously died very close together on their way to visit Iradel.

"Just got pix from my sister she had taken several years ago at Southward Magee Cemetery. The dates on the concrete pieces are very readable. Iredell Southward was born February 27, 1821 and died November 1, 1881 according to the slab. I know the court records register a different date for his death which I would say is more reliable. James C. Southward's dob is June 2, 1836 and dod is March 23, 1879. Martha Caler Southward's dob is September 7, 1833 and dod is March 22, 1879."

James Southward was issued a certificate by the Co., court of Grayson Co for 320 acres. Since the certificate was never approved nor was any land patented, it is doubtful that Southward was a bonafide colonist.
