"Samuel Mathers, son of John K. and Sarah Ann Mathers was born on June 23, 1848 in Union Co.,, Pennsylvania and departed this life on February 14, 1941 at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 1 day. When he was six years old, his family moved to Freeport, Illinois and in his 21st year, they mvoed on to Missouri. Since that time he has made his home in Nodaway Co.,. After his permanent settlement in Missouri, he realized his ambition to travel from the Alleghenies to the Rockies and back to Missouri in a covered wagon. On October 10, 1872 he married Lucy C. Jobe of Barnard. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Mary Rhoads. His wife Lucy passed away on September 21, 1879.
On January 25, 1883 he was married to Josephine Graves of Barnard. To this union were born three children, Chester W. Clarence H, and Mertie Olive, the last of whom preceded him in death on April 14, 1926. On October 8, 1935 , he was bereaved of his wife, Josephine. Since that time his son Clarence H. and family have lived with him to care for him in his later years.
Mr. Mathers was drafted for service in the Civil War but because of his height he was not given active duty. In his early days he took an active part in the German Lutheran Church. For 55 years he has been a member of the Barnard Methodist Church, almost since its organization.
Deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Green of Bedison, MO; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Rhoads of Barnard; two sons, Chester W. of Industrial City, MO and Clarence H. of Barnard; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition many neighbors and friends regret his passing.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church in Barnard, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday of this week, with the Rev. Vaughn Means officiating. Internment was in the I.O.O. F. cemetery, northeast of town."
