1935 OBITUARY as sent by Thomas Lippert
"AUNT MELISSA BAKER DIED THURSDAY EVENING
Mrs. M. V. 'Aunt Melissa' Baker passed away at 1 o'clock Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Jorgenson with whom she has made her home for the past several years. 'Aunt Melissa' was taken ill about a week before her death.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the home conducted by the Rev. J. Howard Thompson of Westboro, a former pastor of the Barnard M. E. Church, assisted by Elton T. Dodson. Burial was in the Barnard Cemetery.
Mary Malissa, daughter of Iraby and Mary Jobe was born November 1, 1846 at Orangeville, Illinois. When about fourteen years of age, she moved to Andrew Co.,, Missouri , where they only lived a short time and then moved to the vicinity of Barnard, MO, where she spent a very useful inspiring, noble Christian life.
On Steptember 10, 1865, she was united in marriage to Martin V. Baker. To this union no children were born , but out of the kindness and love of their hearts they served as foster parents to several children. Among there were twins, John William and Sadie Thompson whom were taken at the age of six years and who remained with them until their marriage. John William married Ida Jobe and to this untion two children were born, Charlie and Bessie. Bessie was only three and her brother six years old when their father died. Mr. and Mrs. Baker then gave these children and their mother a home. Charlie now lives at Riverside, California. Bessie who is now Mrs. P. M. Jorgenson, lives at Barnard and has cared for Grandma Baker for the last five years.
Sadie Thompson, the sister of John William, became the wife of John E. Snyder and to this union was born six children, Martin V., Lowell, Ruth, Mary, Opal and Johnnie. She passed away about 5 years ago.
Others who found homes with Mr and Mrs Baker were Hattie Gary, Addie Pickeral, Malissa Hollenbeck who is now Mrs. Badgers, and Jennie Hollenbeck.
Surely Mr. and Mrs. Baker experience something of the tenderness and affection of the Christ when he said 'Suffer the little children to come unto me' Truely their many friends can speak of such wonderful characters of of such beautiful service.
Mr. Baker passed away about ten years ago. On the evening of March 14th, 1935, at the age of 88 years 4 months and 13 days, 'Aunt Melissa' made adieu to earth and her many friends and slipped away to be reunited wit loved ones and to live with Him who said 'Come up higher'.
Mrs. Baker was a charter member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Barnard, MO and was a faithful and loyal supporter of the church all those years. She lived and died in the faith of a loving Saviour.
She has one brother, A. W. Jobe, of St. Joseph and a host of friends and neighbors who will miss her. She was either 'Aunt Melissa' or 'Grandma Baker' to everyone who knew her. What a heritage!
The memory of her life would say to us:
Be swife dear hear in doing the gracious deed Lest soon they whom thou holdest dearest Be past the need Be swift dear heart in giving the rare sweet flower Nor wait to heap the blossoms the casket In some sad hour Time speedth on and all my chances of blessed service will soon be gone. For her we realize that when life's sweet journey ends Soul and body parted like friends - Life's labor done as sinks the clay Light from the load the spirit flies While heaven and earth combine to say How blest the righteous they die."
