Per Wayne Irwin:"I have found a variety of spellings on Iradell and Southward. One was Southard. My grandmother, Alice Caroline, (d/o William) used to say it had to be spelled 'ward or it was wrong. So I have continued with that spelling. However, the 1840 MO census did use that spelling. ""Thomas Dilford Southward swears he knows that William's name was Homer, as related to me by his daughter Lynda Claudette Southward Wann."
