William Harvey writes:HV Jobe learned to count from 1-10 in Choctaw when he was a boy living in the Choctaw Nation. In later life he wrote down this transcription of the numbers he had learned, probaly orally. It is interesting to look up the Choctaw numbers on the Internet and see how closely the words used by the choctaw today match the words written down by HV Jobe from his childhood recollection.
1893-1895-1896 H. V. Jobe Poll Tax Receipts
William Harvey writes:The Poll Tax receipts are a real piece of American History. Poll Taxes were part of the Jim Crow laws intended to keep African Americans from voting. Poll Taxes were outlawed by the Voting Rights Act of 1964 (which, no doubt, would have pleased HV Jobe who was a political progressive).
1895 US Marshall letter - acknowledges HV Jobe's resignation
William Harvey writes:The US Marshall letter acknowledges HV Jobe's resignation of his commission as a deputy US Marshall. Note that he served under "Hanging Judge Parker," a famous figure of the Old West, and more on Parker can be found on Wikipedia and other sites on the Internet. When HV Jobe died, he was still possessed of the Colt Revolver he had worn as a US Marshall. My Mother said she remembered seeing that gun as a kid and that it was quite a sight. I understand that HUgh D. Jobe donated the gun to the Comboy Museum in Oklahoma, but I have never verified that.

He was elected constable in 1894 and re-elected in 1896 and served one year. He served two years as deputy sheriff, and one year as deputy United States marshall for the Western District of Ark. He came to Okla in 1897 and to Roger Mills county in 1907. In 1900 he was given a recommendation from old friends in Ark. signed by farmers, doctors, merchants, lawyers, county clerk, county judge, county treasurer, ex-sheriff, ex-prosecuting attorney, prosecuting attorney, district judge and state senator, high recommending him as a citizen, and as an officer in doing his duty. This is the man the Socialist party is asking you to elect as sheriff of Roger Mills County in the coming election in November, the man that believes in letting the office seek the man, and not the man seek the office?

Thompson, where she had been an invalid for fourteen years. Rev. S. S. Elliott, pastor of Baptist church at Canton, and Rev. S. L. Isaacs, pastor of Hammon Baptist church conducted the services. Gardner, Willow Springs, MIssouri, Mrs. Fred Adams, Omaha, Nebraska; and Hugh Jobe of Sayre, also several grand-children. Herewith is printed a poem written by Mrs. F. Gardner, as a tribute to her mother:
Mrs. Garner was unable to be with her mother when the end came, due to ill health, and the above composition was read at the funeral by Lee Jobe, nephew of Mrs. Jobe.Mother Mine Mother mine so tender and true, There's naught on earth more dear than you. Fond memories round you will ever cling, Like the fragrance of violets in balmy spring. Your hallowed presence I see from afar, Like the radiance of the evening star. On memories ear I hear again, Your gentle voice in a sweet refrain, Caroling once more a living strain. And the waking echoes bring a sweet sad pain, Fond memories of you will ever stay, Around the path to the end of the way. To cheer my heart if the road be steep, To dry my tears if I should weep. Thus I thank God for a mother's love, So near the infinite that rules above.Card of Thanks

Mrs. H. V. Jobe died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. C. Thompson, in Hammon last Saturday morning. Mrs. Jobe had been an invalid for a number of years, suffering from a strange malady that medicine failed to relieve. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. S. C. Thompson of Hammon, after she became afflicted. Her husband, H. V. Jobe, insurance man of Cheyenne, has been engaged in the insurance business here for several years and has many firends throughout the country who join him in his sorrow. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Strong City, With Rev. Elliott, former pastor of the Strong City church, preaching the sermon. Rev. Isaac gave the scripture reading and sang Mrs. Jobe's favorite hymn, Floyd Rice sang a solo, "The Beautiful White City." Besides her many firends she leaves to mourn her husband, H. V. Jobe; her daughters, Mrs. Fred Adams, Mrs. S. C. Thompson and Mrs. Gardner of South Missouri; a son, Mr. Hugh Jobe. Mrs. Gardner could not attend the funeral because of illness. Obituary
Hugh Volney Jobe was born January 16, 1869 at Prairie Grove Arkansas. He was united in marriage to Cynthia Webb. To this union were born five children, four of whom survive him; his wife and eldest son preceded him in death. While living in Arkansas he served as Deputy United States Marshall. In 1946 he moved to Taloga which was to him the scene of many early memories, including the fording of the South Canadian river to reach the county seat.
Mr. Jobe departed this life Saturday October 13, 1951 at the Community Hospital in Elk City at the age of 82 years and 10 months.
Surviving him are Mrs. Fidela Gardner of Willow Springs, Missouri; Mrs. Fred Adams of Omaha, Nebraska; Hugh Jobe, of San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Susie Thompson of Elk City; eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many, many friends.

Three Hand-Made Dolls from the Lizzie Gardner Collection

The one on the left is a fabric doll with a store bought head, called the Swedish girl. The middle doll is like a normal doll and shoes that you would get in the store, but Elizabeth hand sewed the two dresses, a bonnet, and underwear. The third doll, a little black girl was one that Elizabeth again bought only the head, and hand carved in wood the arms and legs, and made a fabric body. She then also hand sewed the top, yellow jacket, and pants. I am not sure which doll the apron belongs too.

Robert Gardner was nephew of Fidella Gardner, husband of Lee's sister, Lizzie.
Mary Jane (Adams) Harvey wrote to son, William in 2002:
"My mother had a brother named Lee. As a young man he was rather bored with life on the farm in Western Oklahoma and went off to be a cowboy in Wyoming. While he was way out west WWI broke out and he enlisted. He served in France and after the war served some time in the Army of Occupation. Grandma had silk handkerchiefs he sent from France and postcards. Bill you may have those. If not I'm sure Cindy does. He never made it back to Oklahoma. After returning to the states he drifted around and finally married. There is a letter from him in Grandma J's things. He wrote it to his mother promising to come see her. One of my earliest memories is going to the mailbox with my mother and getting a letter telling of his death in Washington State in a fire. It's one of the only times I ever saw my mother cry. Seems they lived in an apartment and it caught on fire. They got out safely and he went back in to rescue his wartime souvenirs and died of smoke inhalation. I think he is buried in Hoquiam, Washington, and I believe Aunt Lizzie corresponded with his widow for many years. Grandma Jobe was never told of his death. Because of her health, she was always shielded from many things."

There is a WWI draft registration for a Lee Jobe born in Cheyenne, Oklahoma and living in Wyoming, and birthdate is 01 Jun 1893 instead of 01 Jun 1894 that we have, but it may be our Lee. It says "enlisted" across the top of the form, which would match the story that our Lee went to war in France.
