MR. JOBE'S TRIP
On June 15th my son-in-law and daughter, Mr. Fred Adams and wife, of Omaha, Nebraska, and my daughter, Susie Thompson, or Elk City came by after me to go on a trip with them. We left Taloga for Omaha, Nebraska the same day. From the south Kansas line to Omaha, it had rained the night before, and there was water everywhere. We stayed there from Wednesday morning until the next Tuesday, the 22nd, and it rained every day. Crops are fine around there. We left Omaha Tuesday the 22nd. and drove all day in the rain to Cheyenne, Wyoming. We saw thousands of bushels of old corn in bins along the road, hay galore and wheat that would make 40 to 50 bushels to the acre. We left Cheyenne on the 23rd and it rained on us until we got to Colorado Springs. On Thursday, the 24th, we visited Pikes Peak. It is 14,109 feet up, but you drive 20 miles to get there. There was snow from near the top on up and was snowing while we were there. Many had on overcoats, and women wore heavy coats. One woman said when she got out of the car, "I can't stand up, and I have not been drinking either." It sure does make you giddy headed. No more Pikes Peak for me, only to look at, not going up. They told us at Colorado Springs that steak had gone to $1.25 per pound and the tourist camps were $10.00 per night. We came on to Walsenburg where we stayed over night, then on through Trinadad, Clayton, New Mexico, Amarillo, Texas and on home to Elk City that night. I forgot to say that we went through the Garden of the Gods, in Colorado, which is a wonderful sight to behold, but I am glad to get back to old Taloga and Dewey County.
