He was a Justice of the Peace in 1884 in Dutch Mills Twp, WashingtonCo, Ark. He studied medicine and was veternarian for his neighborhood. He studied religion and was a Biblical authority and was also a cabinent maker and house builder.William Virgil had in his possession, his father's army canteen and bayonet, his Confederate uniform, and other articles. He used to show them to his grandchildren.
He and Mary settled near Prairie Grove, Washington Co.,, Arkansas, but later moved to Dutch Mills in Washington Co.,, near Cane hill College where their children were educated.

William's father was killed in his own front yard by bushwhackers at the close of the Civil War. William Virgil and his brothers, with neighbors, trailed the killers along the Arkansas/Oklahoma Trace, but never found them. He was the administrator of his father's will.

Surrendered about May or June of 1865 at Boggy Depot

Second Application for Pension. First made from Oklahoma City in 1918 was denied because he owned over $1,000.00 in property. Listed as 100 acres valued at $5.00 per acre, and 40 acres valued at $20.00 an acre; but 1/2 belongs to wife.
Occupation Farming and Carpentery. Now unable to move.
Enlisted in 1862 at Fayetteville, in Arkansas Confederate Calvary under Brigadier General Fagan and Col. Brooks. After the battle of Prairie Grove, Ark. he went with General Hindman's command to Clarksville, Ark. He was hospitalized for about a month due to illness. He then joined General Stand Waite with the 2nd Cherokee Regiment under Colonel Adair in Company A. Disbanded under General Stand Waite in Spring of 1865 at Boggy Depot, Okla.
Samuel T. Stokes of Muskogee Co. Oklahoma attested to Williams service from May 1863 to May 1865 in the 2nd Cherokee Calvary. Felix D. Jobe of Muskogee attested that William served from Spring of 1862 until Spring of 1865 in Co. A. Cavalry under Col. Adiar and General Stan Waite.
[Family history says that Felix served there too, although he has no pension and no service record can be found]
Henry A. Douthitt Attests that he was in the same regiment with William and saw him daily for two years, as does R.F. Miller of Muskogee.
John H. Bond of Hulbert and Henry Ward of Tahlequah attested to his 24 years of residency in Oklahoma
War Department stated on July 6, 1915 his name could not be found on the roll of Company A. 21 [can only assume this must really mean 1st or 2nd] Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, C.S.A.; although he was given his pension.

Jobe School - Muskogee, Oklahoma - taken in 1961. It was northeast of Muskogee, Oklahoma. Sitting in front is Louis Emmett Jobe - father of Lois(Jobe) Cunningham. (He was s/o William Vergil Jobe and Mary Elizabeth Douthitt and gs/o William Pryor Jobe and Elizabeth McRoy and gt gs/o Nathan Jobe and Martha Azbell. The children of Louis N.B. Jobe, Jerome F. Jobe and Thomas Lee Jobe and K. J. (Jobe)Lawrence all attended school here. This is also where Pearl (Jobe) Green (Lois's sister) taught her first school.
