Background Information

George Washington Mears married Melinda C. Adair in the early 1830's, probably in Warren Co. TN. Between the mid 1830's and 1840, we find several records of G. W. Mears, including:

Cannon Co., Court Minutes (1836-1841), page 196
-on list of hands to work on the road from the Town of Woodbury to Hardy Spicers

Cannon Co., TN Deed Abstract, Book A, p. 383-384 -reg. Feb 28, 1838 $500 land on waters of East fork on Stones River formerly owned by Francis Northcutt 45 acres
wit: John Elam, Nancy (L or S) Elam

Cannon Co., TN Deed Abstract, Book A, p. 405 - reg. Mar 17, 1838
George W. MEARS to Nathan Finley
45 acres on east fork of Stones River, line of Widow Tunrley

Cannon Co., TN Deed Abstract, Book A, p. 443-444 - reg. Apr 25, 1838
George W. MEARS to Goldsbury MEARS
$1.00 1 sorrell mare, calves, etc. -indebted to Goldsbury $80

1838 and 1839 Cannon Co., TN Tax List, District 6
George W. MEARS - 1 white poll

We next find G. W. Meaars on 1840 Cannon Co., TN Census. He was living six families away from his brother, William F. Mears (my ancestor). Other nearby neighbors included Nancy Brown, Wm Kirk, Elizabeth Tunley, James Kirby, Temperance Spier, Burwell Spier, O. L. Burnett, Martin St. John, Anderson Burnett, Archibald Stone, Willis Gann, George St. John, and James S. James.

In 1843, G. W. would sell his land to Alex Wilson and move to Pontotoc Co., MS where he appears on the 1850 and 1860 census. Would be very intersting to know if he was aware that his aunt, Nancy (Mears) Coumeans family, was living nearby in Itawamba Co., MS.

As a mother with a son in the military, when I think of this family, I just 'shudder'. In a period of less than a year, she lost 4 of her sons, who were fighting with the Confederate army during that tragic civil war that ripped so many families apart.

Tradition says that Wash Mears married a second time and four of the children living at home got so angry that they got in a covered wagon and came to Texas and settled in Caldwell County. From what I can tell, this would have been 1869.

Special Thanks

Much thanks to Zada Sharp for her research in the 1960's and 1970's and for fowarding me letterrs from Ruth Riley Peavy and letters written to Ruth from Minnie and Tom Mears in 1958.
