When his parents migrated to Arkansas, he was almost 22 and had already fell in love with Elizabeth 'Betty' Alexander. Family stories say that he did go to Arkansas, but quickly returned to Cannon Co., TN where he married Elizabeth on December 30, 1854.The Alexanders were union sympathsizers and as a result when the civil war broke out, Thomas would fight against his brothers who had joined the confederacy in Arkansas.
Special thanks to Ruth Riley Peavy (letter written in Jan 1859) and to Mrs. Henry Brownlow Mears (1970). Would also like to thank Cora Ella (Watson) Mears (1969), Ulysses Grant Hibberd (1970), and my cousin, Zada (Mears) Sharp (research done in 1960's)
