"Known as John Thomas Sr. to distinguish him from his nephew John Thomas who was known as John Thomas Jr. The practice started when they both served on a circuit court jury in 1847. Right there in the minutes it shows John Thomas Senior and John Thomas Jr. It continued throughout the 1850s-as shown on the 1850 census-especially when the two bought land from the United States, which they did alot of. "

"The first Co., seat (of Oregon Co., MO) was Thomasville, named for John Thomas and Matilda Thomas, who on the 8th day of Decmeber 1845, deeded to Oregon Co., a parcel of land ten acres square, beginning in the middle of the main channel of Eleven Point River where the section line crosses the said river, dividing sections 31 and 32 and running north 40 poles, thence east 40 poles, thence south 40 poles, thence west 40 poles to beginning (to wit):Part of the South-West quarter of the South-West quarter of section thirty, Township twenty-five north of range five West.
This ten acres was laid off in 9 blocks with block numter 5 being in the center of the tract of land and was the courts square and the court house was built there. In 1849, a jail was built on the south-east corner of the public square in Thomasville, Missouri."
"Whereas on the 20 May 1847 an order of sale was decreed in the Ripley Co Circuit Court upon a petition brought by John Thomas one of the heirs and legal representatives of Ephrum (sic) Thomas deceased against.....wit:SW1/4 SW1/4 Section 32 T25N R5W (40 acres) and John Thomas being the highest and last bidder for said real estate at the price of three hundred dollars the same was stricken off and sold to the said John Thomas for that sum. (Deed signed by Sheriff 18 Feb 1848. Deed recorded 18 June 1848)."
