THE BLOORS OF STANLEY

There were at least two couples named Bloor in Stanley before the arrival of my own ancestors in the late 19th century. The first, James and Catherine Bloor, and their daughter Keziah, were around in the 1820's, although they appear to have moved to Spondon where Catherine and Keziah died in 1828, and James in 1850 (all three, however, were buried in Stanley). I do not know if they were related to my line - it would appear that Catherine was James' second wife and he did not live in Stanley before he married her.

The other couple who sojourned briefly in Stanley were Samuel and Mary Bloor. Samuel was the son of John and Elizabeth of West Hallam, and it is from Samuel's brother David that my line descends. They baptised some of their children in Stanley but then moved on to Holbrook

(There was also a George Bloor who died in 1842 age 33 - again I do not know of any relationship to myself).

The Bloors from whom I descend came to Stanley from Dale Abbey around 1882. Henry Bloor, a platelayer on the Great Northern Railway, and his wife Mary Jane, arrived in Stanley with their two daughters, Bertha and Florence, and son John Henry. There was also a stepdaughter, Sarah Emma Exton. They had four more children in Stanley, although the youngest, Richard, died when a few weeks old. Henry Bloor was killed in an accident at work in 1893, leaving Mary with young children to bring up. She subsequently moved to West Hallam (the Cinder House, which still stands today) after marrying Nahum Hollingworth.

Photos below show four of Henry and Mary Jane's children - I do not have any photos of the rest.
