THE CLARKS OF STANLEY

Thomas Flint Clark and his wife Julia (nee Carter) were married in West Hallam, and moved to Stanley after the birth of their youngest son. The Clark family and their descendants remained in Stanley until very recently. This photograph was taken about 1894 and shows the whole family. Back Row: Arthur Clark, Charles Willie Clark, Herbert Henry Clark, Hannah Mary Clark Front Row: Francis William Clark, Thomas Flint Clark (father), Hilda Annie Clark, Julia Clark (mother) and Thomas Clark.

Francis William CLARK (left) and Thomas CLARK (right), the eldest two sons of Thomas Flint CLARK and Julia CARTER, were both miners at West Hallam pit, although Thomas lived in Morley and Francis in Stanley. Interestingly, both died in 1933, within a few months of each other.

Arthur CLARK was described as the "dapper" one of the family. He is shown here with his wife Fanny. The photo on the right is of their children, Vera & Victor, taken c. 1910   Hannah Mary HEMSTOCK (nee CLARK) - a daughter of Thomas Flint CLARK. This is an enlargement from the "Stanley Choir" photo shown elsewhere on this site.

Hilda Annie THORNLEY (nee CLARK) - the youngest daughter, and her husband Charles. They lived on New Street and had four children.   Joseph Thomas CLARK was the eldest son of Francis William CLARK. He was apprenticed to the Stanley blacksmith, but never used his trade because when he returned from the First World War the demand for blacksmiths had decreased. He did, however, meet his wife Bertha (shown with him) whilst on active service - she was Belgian. After the war they married and settled in Ilkeston.

Frances Laura CLARK was the second child of Francis William. She married Jim CARRINGTON and lived on High Lane, West Hallam until her death in 1968.   Gertrude Annie CLARK was my grandmother. She was a very sociable woman, knew everyone in the village, and was very fond of her grandchildren. We all used to converge on her house most Sunday afternoons. Sometimes she would take us walking as far as Dale windmill or Stanley Common (across the fields), even into her seventies.

Edgar William CLARK and his wife Frances. They lived across the road from his sister Gertrude Annie, and had four children. Edgar died just a few weeks after his sister Gertrude.   The two youngest children. Francis died at the age of 14, of meningitis. My grandmother always remarked on the number of years since his death, when the anniversary came round. His sister Mary, pictured with him, celebrated her 100th birthday in October 2005.
