THE COWLEY FAMILY

John and Elizabeth Cowley, with their children Joseph and Elizabeth, arrived in Stanley sometime in the late 1860s. John was originally from Hulland, near Ashbourne. Two more daughters, Fanny and Mary, were born to the couple in Stanley, but by the 1891 census they had moved to Dale Abbey.

The top two photographs below show Joseph Cowley (born 1862) with his wife Nellie. The other lady in the right hand photograph is possible Joseph's sister Elizabeth, though this is not certain. The photograph below them is of Joseph in his Metropolitan Police uniform.
