DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

A DOUBLE EVENT FOR THE HARTS

(Ilkeston Pioneer 30th March 1956 p3)

Couples married 25 and 50 years

Easter is usually the time for thinking about newly-weds, but for the Hart families of Stanley and West Hallam this holiday period will be a double celebration of weddings that took place 25 and 50 years ago.

Mr and Mrs Vernon Hart, who now reside at 20 Bagot Street, West Hallam, were married at St Andrew's, Stanley in 1906 -the wedding ceremony was the first by the then new incumbent, the Rev T Williams.

Mr Hart, the elder son of a well-known Stanley family, started work in 1893 earning a shilling a day at Dunn's Hill Brickyard, Dale Abbey, and afterwards he moved to Mapperley Colliery brickyard. In 1896 he commenced work underground as one of the first two pony drivers at Stanley Colliery. He was then 18, and earned 3s 6d a day filling coal. This had increased to 5s 6d when he married, and Mr Hart continued in the Stanley and Mapperley collieries until mechanisation stood him off in 1935. He never returned to mining.

Both he and Mrs Hart - who came to Stanley as a servant at Grange Farm - are in good health, and they are planning a celebration party as soon as possible.

Their eldest son, Mr H Hart, and his wife are celebrating their silver wedding. They live at 74 Station Road, Stanley, and were married at Cotmanhay Church by the Rev H Price. To mark the occasion they are to have a family gathering at their home on Easter Sunday. Mr Hart is a worker at British Celanese.

In commemoration, the two couples are presenting St Andrew's Church, Stanley, with Communion decantors and casket bearing the inscription " To the Grace of God, Mr and Mrs V Hart Golden Wedding, Mr and Mrs H Hart Silver Wedding, Easter 1956." They will be dedicated during Holy Communion on Sunday.
