DEATH OF MARTHA WALTERS

DEATH OF MARTHA WALTERS 1896

(Ilkeston Advertiser 3rd October 1896 )

   FATAL ACCIDENT TO A GIRL

On Friday, an inquest was held at the Bateman's Arms Inn, Stanley Common, concerning the death of Martha Walters, nearly five years of age, the inquiry being conducted by Mr Deputy Coroner Scott. The father of the deceased, a collier named Benjamin Walters, deposed that on Thursday evening about six o'clock he was in the street buying some fruit off a cart. The little girl accompanied him, and suddenly ran in the road of a cart being driven by John Shaw, of Smalley Common. The girl was knocked down, but was not run over.  She was dead, however, when picked up. Dr Cadman, of Horsley Woodhouse, deposed that he was called in to see the deceased, who, in his opinion, died from rupture of the heart. The father said that the affair was quite an accident. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death." We understand that both Mr Hartley, the owner of the cart, and the driver have sworn generous sympathy with the bereaved family.
