THE THOMPSON  FAMILY

THE THOMPSON FAMILY

(Photos and information supplied by Barbara Williams, Sally Hyde, Edith Green & Adrian Snape)

The photographs below show some of the children of Joseph Thompson and his wife Mary (nee Cotton), and their descendants.

Three of Joseph and Mary Thompson's children, from left to right, John (born 1846), Sarah Ann (born 1849) and William (born 1857).

Isaac Thompson was born in Stanley on the 17th March 1861. His mother was 16 year old Rebecca Thompson, eldest daughter of Mary Thompson and her late husband Joseph. The identity of Isaac's father is unknown, although family tradition points the finger at the son of a local butcher. When Rebecca later married Reuben Hemstock, Isaac remained with his grandmother and her second husband Joseph Hart.

Isaac married Emma Lee in 1882, and they had three sons and three daughters (although the two eldest sons died as children). They later moved to Stanley Common and finally to West Hallam in 1925. In 1948, a search by the West Hallam News for the village's eldest inhabitant led to an article about Isaac, by then a sprightly 87. In fact he lived to the age of 93.

On the left is a photograph of Isaac's three daughters when they were younger. I am told that Edith is on the left, Annie in the middle, and Elsie on the right.

The photographs below show some more of Isaac's descendants. Isaac himself is second left on the group photo, with his son Harry, Harry's wife Mary (nee Hartley) and their son Harold. The other photo shows Harry and Mary's other son, William, with his wife Eva.
