THE FRETWELL FAMILY

THE FRETWELL FAMILY

(Photos and information kindly supplied by June Johnson)

Priscilla Mary FRETWELL (left) lived at 100 Station Road, Stanley from 1940 until her death in 1948, with her son Frederick Charles Fretwell and his wife Kitty (nee HOWE). She was born Priscilla BOOKER  in Chipping Campden, Glos. about 1876 and was orphaned at an early age. She went to work for Squire Millar Mundy at Shipley Hall, and married Enos Fretwell at Cotmanhay in 1898. She was widowed in 1939.

The photograph on the left was taken at the wedding of Priscilla's daughter Violet, to John Henry HART of Stanley. The wedding was at Cotmanhay on the 6th April 1931. The bride and groom are in the middle, the other two men are Violet's brothers John Thomas Fretwell (left) and Fred Fretwell (right). The bridesmaid on the left is Violet's sister Elizabeth Fretwell, the other bridesmaid's identity is unknown. Violet and her husband (who was known as Harry)  lived at 174 Station Road, Stanley, and later at Stanley Common. The photograph on the right was taken at their Golden Wedding.

On the right is a photograph of Frederick Charles Fretwell. He bought his house in Stanley for £200 and lived there from 1940 until his death in 1965. It was an end cottage. The outside lavatory was knocked through into the kitchen which was narrow but long, with a door in between (not allowed now by law) then there was the living room and the parlour. Up the winding stairs there were two bedrooms, then up again into the attic bedroom. He kept a knitting loom in one of the bedrooms.

Below left is another photograph of Fred Fretwell with his wife Kitty. Also shown (on the right of the photo) are Fred's brother John Thomas Fretwell and his wife Rose.

The photograph below right shows Kitty and Rose together.
