STANLEY (

STANLEY (or more accurately West Hallam) STATION

(Photos supplied by Edith Green and Janet Hadcock)

The Great Northern Railway Extension was cut through Stanley East to West in 1876/77. The station opened early in 1878 and was briefly called Stanley Station. However, because of a confusion with another Stanley Station in Yorkshire (also on the GNR) the name was changed to "West Hallam for Dale Abbey." It was situated on the east side of Canmer Lane (now called Station Road). The line ran from Nottingham Victoria to Derby Friargate. At the turn of the 20th century the station dealt with upwards of 90,000 passengers a year, 700 parcels, 6,200 tons of goods received, 10,500 tons of goods forwarded, and 130 head of livestock received. However, the station closed in 1964 during the Beeching cuts. The signal box and station were demolished in 1967, apart from the main building, which is now a private house.
