Taxable Lists of Cumberland County

(1750, 1762, 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1785)

Cumberland County was created from Lancaster County on 27 January 1750. In that year, the names of Andrew Millikin and John Millikin appear in the taxable of East Pennsboro and are listed in the earliest list of taxable returns for the county given by Mr. Daniel Rupp in The History and Topography of Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Bedford, Adams, Perry, Somerset, Cambria & Indiana Counties (Lancaster City, 1818), p. 360. These two men are also repeated in The History of Cumberland and Adams Counties (Chicago, 1886), Chapter II, p. 11. It also contains an additional list for Cumberland County covering 1762, which only lists Andrew Millikin (p. 26).

The following list contains the names of the Millikin/Milligans liable to pay tax in 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1785. A young man coming of legal age (21) would be taxed on his personal property, usually a horse or a cow. In Pennsylvania, counties created a separate list for unmarried men often labelled freemen or single freemen, meaning they were not indentured to any individual. Once married, his name would leave the single freeman list and suddenly appear on the regular list with other heads of families.
