Cumberland

St. Bees Parish Church Records

The parish of St. Bees (St. Bega) lies within the old union of Whitehaven in Cumberland and comprises the town of Whitehaven, and the villages or hamlets of St. Bees, Ennerdale, Eskdale, Walton, Hensingham, Kinneyside, Lowside Quarter, Nether Wasdale, Preston Quarter, Rottington, Sandwith, and Weddiker. The St. Bees parish register covering christenings, marriages and burials from 1538 to 1837 have been printed in the Parish register section of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society (1968). The following list has been extracted from this book, which is available in the Cumbria Archives Centre in Carlisle. With the exception of the name Jacob, where the Latin form of a Christian name is given in the original, for the purpose of this list, it has been transcribed into its English form. In addition, care has been taken to correct dates of any event between the 1st January to 24th March, which would have fallen at the end of the year in the old Julian calendar up to 1752. In 1582, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar (the Gregorian calendar), which England having broken away from the Catholic Church did not accept until 1752. Thus, for dates prior to 1752, the use of the Julian calendar can cause some confusion. Where for example, a child was baptised in February 1645, under the Gregorian calendar it would be corrected to February 1646. An asterisk is used to indicate where I have made this amendment.
