The Parishes of Hampshire

St. Marys Parish Church, Portsea, Hampshire

St. Marys parish church stands on the oldest church site on Portsea Island, facing the Isle of Wight and was once called Portsmouth Common. Until the end of the seventeenth century, Portsea was just farmland outside of Old Portsmouth, where the workers employed at the royal dockyard at Gunwharf resided. However, at the commencement of the eighteenth century, they started to build houses in the common land outside the dockyard, and where John Milligen was amongst the first to occupy houses built in Pudshole, now St. Jamess Street in Portsea, as early as 1704. He may have been related to Richard and Elizabeth Milligan, the parents of Elizabeth and Margaret Milligan, whose baptisms are recorded in the nearby churches of Gosport and Alverstoke:

Gosport Parish

February 24, 1709
Baptism of Elizabeth Melligon daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Melligon.

Alverstoke Parish

September 23, 1711
Baptism of Margaret Maligen daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Maligen.

Richard and Elisabeth Milligan visibly disappear from the Hampshire records and may have moved elsewhere or emigrated to America. Richard appears to have worked in the Royal Navy shipyard establish in Portsmouth, which existed long before John and he first appeared in the Portsmouth area. Their appearance in the written church records coincides with David and Sarah Milligan of the Isle of Wight, who may or not have been the parent of William Mullikin buried in parish church yard of Cowes on 9 April, 1693. Like Portsmouth, ship building had been carried out at Cowes before 1700. The Milligans of Portsea were sailors, carpenters and shipwrights and in the earliest records relating to apprenticeships, we find Johns son, also called John, enrolled as an apprentice carpenter with William Baron of H.M.S. Kent.

The baptismal, marriage and burial records of St. Marys Portsea (CHU3) commence in 1654 and in the list below, I extract as far as possible those Ms recorded in the records from the eighteenth century and early part of the nineteenth century. I have also included what few references there are from St. Thomas of Canterbury in Portsmouth (CHU2), which also commence in 1654. Until 1752, Great Britain followed the Julian calendar with New Year commencing on 25 March, and from then onwards, adopted the Gregorian calendar. I have adjusted the years, where the month falls in January, February and March. I have also included extracts form the Portsea Rate Books for the Poor commenced in 1700 and the Duties Paid for Apprentices Indentures between 1710 and 1811. This will add to the general history of the Milligans of Portsea, who origins are the subject of this search.
