The Parish of Artrea

The parish of Artrea or Ardtrea (Ardtragh) is partly in the barony of Loughinsholin in Co. Londonderry and partly in the old barony of Dungannon in Co. Tyrone. The larger of the two parts is located in Co. Londonderry, and is bounded on the north and northwest by the parishes of Ballyscullion, Magherafelt, Desertlyn and on the south and southeast by the parishes of Arboe, Tamlaght and Ballinderry, with the Lough Neagh on the east. There are three Churches of Ireland in the parish: Artrea Church of Ireland is located in Co. Tyrone, and has baptisms and marriages from 1811 onwards with gaps, burials from 1812 onwards with gaps and vestry minutes from 1773 onwards (the earliest between 1773 and 1810 are in local custody). Woods Chapel, which served the market town of Moneymore and the outlying district in Co. Londonderry, has baptisms, marriages and burials from 1808 onwards, and vestry minutes from 1792. The third church, Ballyeglish only has records from 1868. Woods Chapel Church of Ireland has parish census of 1829, which has not been examined.

The baptismal and marriage registers of First Moneymore Presbyterian Church start in 1827. There is a gap in the marriages between 1834 and 1845. Second Moneymore has baptisms from 1845 onwards and marriages from 1868. I found no Milliken or Milligan baptisms in First Moneymore between 1827 and 1864, and no baptisms in Second Moneymore between 1845 and 1870. The 1831 Census of Ireland, which survives for the whole of Co. Londonderry records the returns for three Milliken households in the parish of Artrea; John Milliken (sic. Mulligan), Samuel Miliken of Ballymulderg and Mary Milliken of Ballygillen. The Census returns for John Milliken of Ballindurm and Samuel Miliken of Ballymulderg are given below:
