The Parish of Carnmoney

The parish of Carnmoney is bounded to the north and northwest by the parish of Templepatrick and east and northeast respectively by the parishes of Carrickfergus and Ballylinney, on the west by the parish of Shankill (Belfast). It originally comprised churches of Coole and Monkstown, which were erected into a single parish church. The civil parish records for the Church of Ireland begin in 1788 with baptisms, marriages in 1791 and burials in 1845 onwards. The parish is also home to another two Church of Ireland, built in the 1800s, and several denominational churches, three Presbyterian, a Methodist and Roman Catholic churches. I have listed in order the earliest records.

Carnmoney Presbyterian congregation has it history taken from 1657, for in that year the Rev. James Shaw, was ordained in the Presbyterian manner, as minister of Carnmoney Parish. Prior to this, the Presbyterians worshipped at Belfast, Templepatrick and Carrickfergus. The earliest baptisms and marriages for the congregation dating from 1708, catalogued under MIC1P/37/1-3, with an index compiled separately. There are also church session records beginning in 1686, which does not run in strict chronological order with the result that minutes from various years can be scattered over several pages. It also contains baptisms, 1726-1760, marriages 1727-1758, and is catalogued MIC1P/4.

Another important source is the McKinney book, which preserves a record of baptisms, marriages, and deaths for a number of Presbyterian families attached to Carnmoney church another churches in the Six Mile Water valley, including, a census of Ballyeaston Congregation giving the names of persons, age and occupation. These are found under the catalogue number T1013/1-2 at PRONI. Both the MIC1P/37 and T1013 collections form the basis of the records relating to the early history of the Millikins in the district in Carnmoney, Templepatrick and Ballylinney districts.
