Catholic Parish of Clonmellon

The Catholic parish of Clonmellon, known also as Killalon and Killan, is located in the Diocese of Meath. Its boundaries include the civil parishes of Killua, Clonarney and part of Delvin in Co. Westmeath and Killalon in Co. Meath. The town of Clonmellon is first recorded in print on Taylor and Skinners map of the roads of Ireland in 1778, and was built by Sir Thomas Chapman sometime between 1767 and 1777 and got its name from a moat near the town call Cruckmillion in the civil parish of Killua. The Mulligan family of Kilrush lived on the Chapman estate, which takes its name from Sir Benjamin Chapman, a captain in the Cromwells army. The castle and its surrounding lands were confiscated from the Knights Hospitals of St. John and granted to Capt. Chapman in 1667. The old place-name Mulganstown is located in the civil parish of Clonarney and Catholic parish of Clonmellon, but it may not be connected to this family. Clonmellon has some of the earliest surviving baptismal, marriage and burial registers dating from 1759.
