Parish of Derryloran

The parish of Derryloran is located in that part of the Diocese of Armagh in County Tyrone with a portion extending into County Londonderry. It is bounded on the north and northwest by the parish of Lissan and on the east by parish of Artrea and Arboe, and the south by the parish of Desertcreat. The parish church is called St. Lurans and is located near Cookstown in the townland of Derryloran alias Kirktown. It has the earliest baptismal, marriage and burial records for the parish and date from 1797.

Through the efforts of the St. Lurans parish church and others, all the baptismal registers from 1795 to 1896, marriages from 1797 to 1835 and burials from 1797 to 1879 with gaps have been reproduced online and transcribed by volunteers. This has been a huge undertaking and all credit must surely go to those people who have made most of the early church records available to the wider public online. See the following links for St. Lurans Parish Church records.

Derryloran Parish Transcripts Online

There are three Presbyterian Churches in the parish and all three are located in Cookstown with 3rd Cookstown holding the earliest baptismal registers from 1835, 1st Cookstown from 1836 and 2nd only beginning in 1852. For all three congregations, the earliest marriages only date from 1845 onwards. None of these records have been research by me.

The parish also has records covering the Protestant Householders of 1740 and the Religious Census of 1766. The earliest M appears in Religious Census in 1766, Francis Mulligan of Ballygroogan. He was a Protestant however as the religious census of Derryloran does not distinguish between those who belonged either to the Established or Dissenter Churches e.g. Presbyterians, it is not certain what church he attended. It is possible though he was the father of Robert Milligan of Ballygroogan, whose children, Robert and Rebecca, were christened at St. Lurans Parish Church.
