Parish of Newtownards
The parish of Newtownards is located in the Diocese of Down and is bounded on the north by the parish of Bangor, on the northwest by Holywood, on the west by Dundonald and on the east by Donaghadee. The south part of the parish bounds the parishes of Comber and Grey Abbey. At one time, there were eight Presbyterian Churches, the oldest being First Newtownards in Frances Street, which is believed to have been founded in 1642, when the Scottish Covenanting Army was based in and around Newtownards. However, the earliest baptismal records only date from 1833: an Index to the original records still held in local custody is available at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
The first Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church in Frances Street was founded in 1742, after a split with the Old Light (First Newtownards). This congregation has the earliest extant baptismal records dating from only 1827 and copies of the baptismal records are held by PRONI CR.4/7.
Although, called the Second Newtownards Presbyterian Church it was the third Presbyterian Church built in the town and opened in 1771. The congregation was Anti-Burgher Seceder. Its baptismal records date from 1832 and copies have been micro-filmed by PRONI. In the 1790s, the Reformed Presbyterian Church built a meeting house on Ann Street. Unfortunately, there are no early baptismal records for this congregation.
Four further Presbyterian Congregations were formed in the 1800s. Regent Street Presbyterian Church was formed as a split from First Newtownards in 1835, and from this date onwards, the register of baptisms has been kept. Fourth Newtownards Presbyterian Church was formed in 1854 and has baptismal records cover the period 1854 to 1906.
The last two congregations to be formed in the 1800s where as a result of the 1859 Great Revival and in the case of Strean Presbyterian Church, also due to a disagreement with the First Presbyterian Church over the appointment of a minister. Strean Presbyterian Church was formed in 1865, and few years later, Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church was formed in 1861. Strean Presbyterian Church has baptismal records from only 1888, whilst Greenwell Street starts in 1866. The records for both are held at PRONI.
The earliest records covering the Church of Ireland in Newtownards were destroyed by fire in the old Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922. The Zion Methodist has some baptismal records covering the period 1847 to 1868, and from 1880 onwards. However, the most comprehensive list of Millikens and Milligans is found in the records of First Newtownards, followed by Regent Street Presbyterian Church and listed below.
