The Quakers and Tithe Mongers in Ireland

The first Quaker or Friends meeting in Ireland was established at Lurgan, Co. Armagh, in 1654 by William Edmundson a former soldier in Cromwells parliamentary arm. Within the next ten years other meeting houses where established in other parts of Ireland. Almost from the commencement, the Quakers kept a record of their membership, including marriages and quarterly minutes. They also preserved a unique collection of records on the sufferings of their people, largely at the hands of the tithe mongers, who were employed to collect the tithe money to support the Established Church of Ireland. The tithe was due to the minister of the local Church of Ireland in each parish and was collect by a tithe proctor, called a tithe monger. They were usually well-armed men and required assistants to forcibly seize goods or animals in lieu of the tithe monies. Neither Catholics, Presbyterians nor others not members of the Established Church liked paying tithes, a form of ecclesiastical tax. In the list below there are references to James Millikin of Legacorry in Co. Armagh and Moyallen in Co. Down, a Quaker and the names of the tithe mongers, also called tithe takers, employed to collect tithe from him. It is followed by another list of Mulligans, employed to collect the tithe in other parts of Ireland. In these records, the official minister or vicar of the parish church is called a priest, a term that should not be confused a Catholic priest.
